Box Score 2 SCRANTON, Pa. – Back in action for the first time in eight days, The University of Scranton softball team (10-5) notched a pair of victories over the Marywood Pacers (11-5) in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Pacers Field in Scranton.
The Royals took game one by a score of 4-1 and completed the sweep with an 8-3 victory in the nightcap.
Game One
Graduate student hurler Jennifer Sweeney (Wind Gap, Pa./Dumont) allowed just one run on six hits in a complete game effort and the Royals used a four-run fourth inning to pick up the 4-1 win in game one.
Sweeney fanned four in her seven innings of work and improved to 4-2 on the year with the victory.
Things were scoreless in the top of the fourth when the Royals loaded the bases via a pair of singles and a walk to set the stage for a costly Pacers error that led to two runs and a two-run triple from junior Jenna Davida (Congers, N.Y./Clarkstown North) that made it a 4-0 game.
Marywood got on the board with an RBI double from Emily Rose in the home half of the seventh.
Mara Hamm was tagged the loss for the Pacers after giving up four runs on seven hits to go along with three walks and three strikeouts in 7.0 IP.
Seven different players tallied a hit in the game one victory for Scranton.
Game Two
The Royals broke open a one run game with four runs in the top of the seventh to finish off the sweep of the Pacers in the 8-3 win.
Sophomore Jessica Stadler (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) provided an RBI triple in the seventh, while a pair of sacrifice flies and a Marywood error plated the other insurance runs in the inning.
Freshman Emma Tirollo (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) earned the win in the circle for the Royals to improve to 5-1 on the year as she allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits to go along with four walks and three strikeouts in five innings of work. Sophomore Courtney Wellet (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) surrendered an unearned run on two hits and struck out one over two innings to notch her third save of the year.
Gianna Marsico was charged with all eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits and walked four in 7.0 IP to take the loss for the Pacers.
Sweeney put the Royals on the board with a three-run blast in the first inning and Davida added an RBI double in the second for an early 4-0 advantage. The home run was Sweeney's fifth of the season, which is tops in the Landmark Conference.
Marywood rallied with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to cut the lead to 4-3, but Scranton responded with the afore-mentioned four run seventh to put the game away.
Davida (2-3, 2B, RBI, SB, 2 R), Stadler (2-3, 3B, 2 R) and Sweeney (3-3, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, R) all registered multi-hit games in the nightcap.
The Royals are back in action on Saturday as they host Drew in a Landmark Conference doubleheader with first pitch of game one at Magis Field set for 1 p.m.
