Box Score 2 WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The University of Scranton softball team (15-8) dropped a pair of one run heartbreakers to the Wilkes University Colonels (12-10) in a non-conference twin bill on Thursday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex in Wilkes-Barre.
Wilkes won both games by a score of 3-2.
Game One
The Colonels plated three runs in the sixth and held on for the 3-2 victory in game one.
Things were scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when Wilkes' Jessie Smith knocked in a run with an RBI double and two runs scored on a wild pitch.
Scranton rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the seventh including an RBI single from junior Alyssa Segnello (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive), but a flyout to left field with runners at second and third and two outs ended the game at 3-2.
Graduate student Jennifer Sweeney (Wind Gap, Pa./Dumont) was dealt the loss for the Royals after allowing three runs on five hits while walking three and fanning five in six innings of work. Rachel Pritchard tallied the win for Wilkes as she allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits to go along with a walk and two strikeouts in a complete game effort.
Four different players tallied a hit in game one for Scranton including senior Jessica Indelicato (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) who doubled and later scored.
Game Two
Pritchard delivered a two-out, two-run walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh to give Wilkes another 3-2 victory in the nightcap.
The Colonels had put two runners on with a walk and hit by pitch earlier in the inning.
Freshman Emma Tirollo (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) took the tough luck loss for the Royals after giving up the three runs on six hits while walking three and fanning five over 6 2/3 IP. Sami Hendershott tossed three scoreless innings to earn the win for Wilkes.
After Wilkes got on the board in the bottom of the second, Scranton immediately answered with a run in the third as Segnello singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on junior Jenna Davida's (Congers, N.Y./Clarkstown North) RBI double. Segnello gave the Royals a 2-1 lead an inning later with an RBI single that plated fellow junior Lauren Cawley (Duryea, Pa./Scranton Prep).
Cawley (2-3, R) and Segnello (2-3, RBI, R) both had multi-hit games in the nightcap for head coach Caitlyn Seamster's team.
The Royals are back in action on Saturday afternoon for a key Landmark Conference doubleheader at Susquehanna with first pitch of game one slated for 1 p.m.
