Big Second Quarter Carries Field Hockey Past Marywood, 4-0

Box Score

SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton field hockey team (4-0) scored three goals in the second quarter to break the game open and cruised to a 4-0 victory over the Marywood Pacers (1-4) in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Marywood.

This marks the third time in four seasons that the Royals have gotten off to a 4-0 start.

Junior Bridget Abraldes (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) opened the scoring in the third minute as she backhanded a shot past the Pacers' Joby Wojton for the early 1-0 lead. Abraldes struck again in the 20th minute as she collected a loose ball in front of the cage after a feed from sophomore Reagan Dolan (Broomall, Pa./Bonner & Prendergast) and poked it home for her second goal of the night.

The multi-goal game was the fourth of Abraldes' career and her first since posting three straight multi goal efforts in victories over Wilkes, Goucher and Drew from Oct. 6-13, 2021.

Scranton extended the lead to 3-0 in the 23rd minute when Dolan's blast from the top of the circle off a penalty corner was tipped in front by junior Elle Collins (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) for her first goal of the season. Just over five minutes later, fellow junior Katie Redding (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) rocketed a shot past Wojton to make it a 4-0 game and notch her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Redding's five goals are also tops in the Landmark Conference.

Marywood tallied five shots over the final two quarters, but the Royals' defense held strong and freshman Kiera Lamb (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) kept the Pacers off the scoreboard with a defensive save in the 55th minute following a shot by Lauren Youngken.

Senior goalie Clare Maguire (Oreland, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph Academy) and sophomore Gianna Travia (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) each made one save in 30 minutes of action to combine on the shutout for the Royals, while Wojton made two saves for the Pacers.

The University of Scranton field hockey team returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Gwynedd Mercy with start time slated for 4 p.m.
