Women's Soccer Scores Most Goals Since 2004; Rolls Past Wilkes in 8-0 Win

Box Score

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Freshman Lindsay Sundheimer (Highland Mills, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) scored just 0:43 into the match and The University of Scranton women's soccer team (5-1-1) rolled to an 8-0 victory over the Wilkes Colonels (2-5) in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Bruggeworth Field in Wilkes-Barre.

The eight goals are the most the Royals have scored since a 9-0 victory over King's on Oct. 7, 2004.

Sundheimer took a feed in the box from sophomore Emily Bannon (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) and beat Colonels' keeper Hannah Landis with a shot to the top left corner for the early 1-0 advantage. Junior Mary Haggerty (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) struck in the 18th minute with an assist from classmate Niamh Healy (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee) and slid a shot past Landis and sophomore Samantha Goffice (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) headed one home in the 39th minute to give Scranton the 3-0 edge at halftime.

The Royals held a dominant 10-0 shot advantage over the opening 45 minutes.

From there, head coach Colleen Pivirotto's team broke the game wide open with three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to extend lead to 6-0. In the 49th minute, Haggerty delivered a corner into the box and Bannon headed it home past the goalie and junior Claire Mulholland (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) found the back of the net with unassisted goals in both the 51st and 55th minutes. On both occasions, Mulholland beat the keeper with a shot to the far post.

Mulholland notched the first multi-goal game of her career.

Another junior joined the scoresheet in the 71st minute as Alaina McLaughlin (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) ripped a shot from the edge of the box off a feed from senior Devon Schroeder (North Bellemore, N.Y./Mepham) and in the 77th minute, senior Evelyn Bruggeman (Coatesville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) completed the scoring with a header following a cross from McLaughlin on the wing.

Scranton held a 19-3 shot advantage in the contest led by three from Mulholland.

Three different goalies combined on the shutout for the Royals as sophomore Nikki Olson (Stoughton, Mass./Ursuline Academy) played the first half, junior Dana Ogilvie (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) saw 33 plus minutes of action and freshman Anna Donnellan (Nanuet, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) preserved the victory by playing the final 11 plus minutes.

Landis made one save and Hannah Sweeney tallied two in the setback for Wilkes.

The Royals return to action on Saturday for the Landmark Conference opener at Catholic with start time slated for 4 p.m.
