Newcomers Shine as Men's Soccer Uses Strong Second Half to Defeat Marywood, 6-1

Box Score

SCRANTON, PA (September 21, 2022) -- The University of Scranton men's soccer team outscored Marywood 4-0 in the second half to earn a convincing 6-1 victory at Weiss Field on Wednesday evening in a match that featured six different Royals on the score sheet.

With the win Scranton moves to 5-1-1 on the season as it prepares to head into conference play this weekend.

The Royals wasted no time getting on the board as freshman Max MacCaull (Fayetteville, N.Y. / Jamesville-DeWitt) scored the first goal of his Scranton career off a rebound in the box to give his squad an early 1-0 lead in the third minute.

Marywood responded less than seven minutes later as they tied up the match at one a piece with a goal from Kiernan Wilder in the 10th minute. Scranton regained its lead midway through the opening half as freshman Logan Campbell (Chalfont, Pa. / Central Bucks South) scored the eventual game-winner in the 26th minute. Following a dangerous sequence in front of the Marywood net, Campbell used his chest to guide the ball over the goal line for his first career goal.

Sophomore Ciaran Corr (Newtown Square, Pa. / Marple Newtown) continued his fine play of late and notched his team leading fourth goal of the season on a beatifully placed shot into the far corner to give the Royals a two goal cushion in the 58th minute. Sophomore Sean Quinn (Stony Point, N.Y. / Albertus Magnus) picked up the assist on Corr's goal for his first of the season.

Scranton added to its tally in the 71st minute as senior Brendan King (Lancaster, Pa. / Hempfield) used his size and strength to convert on a corner kick from junior Dylan Estevez (Garnerville, N.Y. / Don Bosco Prep). Estevez delivered a great service to the near post and King buried the ball into the far corner with his head to increase the lead to 4-1 in favor of the Royals.

Freshman Gavin Scavino (Succasunna, N.J. / Gill St. Bernard's) also scored the first goal of his career as he tucked away his shot in the 87th minute to make it 5-1. Sophomore Zack Simcsak (Langhorne, Pa. / Holy Ghost Prep) who picked up the assist on Scavino's goal followed up less than a minute later with a goal of his own on a penalty kick to round out the scoring on the night. The goal also marked the first of Simcsak's career.

Senior Aidan Hartey (Elkins Park, Pa. / St. Joseph's Prep) got the start in goal before giving way to freshman Charlie Smith (Devon, Pa. / Conestoga) at the start of the second half. Smith then got relieved by junior Joe Weinstein (Manasquan, N.J. / Manasquan) in the 82nd minute which marked the first action of his career.

Scranton outshot Marywood 24-5 in the contest and held a 5-1 advantage in corners.

The men's soccer team will open up conference play this weekend when they head to Catholic for a 1:00 PM kickoff.
