Hegarty's Free Kick Goal Pushes No. 10 Women's Soccer Past Stockton, 1-0

Box Score

GALLOWAY, N.J. – Senior Teresa Hegarty (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) scored the lone goal of the match in the 66th minute and The No. 10 University of Scranton women's soccer team (2-0) closed out an unbeaten weekend at the Stockton University Tournament with a 1-0 victory over the host Ospreys (2-1) on Sunday evening.

Hegarty lined up for a free kick just outside the box and curled it perfectly into the top right corner for a 1-0 lead. The goal was Hegarty's first of the season and the eighth of her Royals career.

After an early chance from junior Claire Mulholland (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) in the third minute, the first half proved to be a defensive battle on both sides as there were four combined shots with all four coming from the Royals. Freshman Lindsay Sundheimer (Highland Mills, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) and sophomore Samantha Goffice (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) had consecutive shots in the waning minutes of the half, but things remained scoreless at the break.

Scranton nearly broke through in the 54th minute when Stockton goalie Megan Brady turned away a shot to keep things deadlocked at zero. The Royals would continue to mount pressure leading up to Hegarty's eventual game-winner in the 66th minute and held off a couple of Stockton chances over the final 20 plus minutes to seal a second consecutive shutout victory. Sophomore goalie Nicole Olson (Stoughton, Mass./Ursuline Academy) denied the Ospreys' Erica Dietz in the 76th minute and stood tall in goal in the final 10 minutes as the Ospreys had a pair of corner kicks opportunities.

The Royals' backline put together an impressive defensive effort as they held Stockton to just two shots on the day and held a 13-2 advantage in the contest behind three shots from junior Niamh Healy (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee). This marks the second straight day that Scranton has held the opposition to just two shot attempts after a 28-2 edge in Saturday's 5-0 victory over Kean.

Olson notched her first career shutout with one save for the Royals, while Brady tallied four saves in net for Stockton.

The University of Scranton women's soccer team returns home to host Marywood in the home opener on Wednesday night at Weiss Field at 7 p.m.
