Strong Second Half Leads Men's Soccer to 3-0 Win at Delaware Valley

Box Score

DOYLESTOWN, PA (September 6, 2022) -- Junior Patrick Walls Kelly (Devon, Pa. / Conestoga), sophomore Adam Havens (Freehold, N.J. / Freehold Township), and freshman Tyler Colton (Syracuse, N.Y. / Central Square) all scored second half goals to lead The University of Scranton men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory at Delaware Valley on Tuesday evening.

With the win the Royals move to 2-1 on the season.

Scranton saw the opening chance of the game in the 6th minute of action as freshman Logan Campbell (Chalfont, Pa. / Central Bucks South) forced a save out of Delaware Valley's goalkeeper Andrew Roberto. The Aggies created a chance just a few minutes later but senior goalkeeper Aidan Hartey (Elkins Park, Pa. / St. Joseph's Prep) was up to the test and made the save to keep the game scoreless.

After a nice exchange in the midfield, Havens created a chance for freshman Gavin Scavino (Succasunna, N.J. / Gill St. Bernard's) who put a strong effort on frame that was pushed wide by Roberto in the 19th minute.

Both sides continued to push the action in the late stages of the opening half, but the game remained scoreless headed into the break. Scranton held a 7-2 shot advantage at halftime.

The Royals wasted no time getting on the score sheet in the second half as Walls Kelly scored on a header off a corner kick from Havens to give Scranton a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute. The junior midfielder did well to navigate through traffic and place the ball into the far right corner past the outstretched arm of Roberto.

Colton made it 2-0 in the 71st minute as the freshman scored the first goal of his career at Scranton. Colton crashed the net after a shot from fellow freshman Justin Curran (Media, Pa. / The Shipley School) and was able to bury the rebound into the back of the net.

Hartey was called into action again in the 76th minute as he made an impressive diving save on a free kick to maintain the shutout for Scranton. Havens wrapped up the scoring in the 86th minute as he recieved a throw-in from Campbell and used his skill to turn past a pair of Aggie defenders. He then ripped a left footed shot into the bottom right corner of the net to make it 3-0.

Matt Pivirotto's squad outshot the Aggies 17-7 in the contest and held a 7-2 advantage in corners. Hartey showed well in the first start of his career, making four saves on seven shots faced. The senior goalkeeper also posted the first clean sheet of the year for the Royals.

The University of Scranton men's soccer team returns to action on Saturday in the first game of a triple-header at Weiss Field as they take on Kean University at 12:00 PM.
