Women's Soccer Topples Marywood 6-0 in Home Opener

Box Score

SCRANTON, PA (September 7, 2022) -- Six different Royals got on the scoresheet as the University of Scranton women's soccer team posted a dominating 6-0 win over Marywood in its home opener at Weiss Field on Wednesday night.

The tenth ranked team in the nation improves to 3-0 on the season with tonights' victory.

Scranton got to work early as junior Gabrielle Richetti (Holbrook, N.Y. / Sachem East) opening up the scoring in the eighth minute with a well executed one-touch finish into the bottom right corner off a cross from sophomore Samantha Goffice (Gilbertsville, Pa. / Boyertown Area) on the left wing.

Freshman Lindsay Sundheimer (Highland Mills, N.Y. / Monroe Woodbury) then made it 2-0 in the 20th minute as she scored off a rebound in the box for the first goal of her career. Scranton saw several chances hit the crossbar/post in the late stages of the first half but the score remained headed into halftime.

Less than five minutes into the second half junior Mary Haggerty (Garden City, N.Y. / Garden City) scored the goal of the night with a 25 yard rocket into the top shelf to make it 3-0 in favor of the Royals. Senior Teresa Hegarty (Bryn Mawr, Pa. / Merion Mercy Academy), who picked up the assist on Haggerty's goal, followed up just three minutes later  with a goal of her own as she dribbled past the Marywood defense and picked out a spot in the bottom corner leaving the keeper no chance.

Senior Claire Sites (Collegeville, Pa. / Spring-Ford Area) added to the tally in the 59th minute as she knocked in a header off a corner kick from Haggerty to make it 5-0.

The Royals wrapped up the scoring in the 88th minute as senior Evelyn Bruggeman (Coatesville, Pa. / Bishop Shanahan) scored her first goal of the season on a penalty kick.

Scranton outshot Marywood 24-1 in the contest and held a 6-0 advantage in corners. The Royals looked solid in the back, not allowing many opportunites for Marywood. Sophomore Nicole Olson (Stoughton, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) got the start in net and was relieved by junior Dana Ogilvie (Piscataway, N.J. / Piscataway) midway through the second half.

The University of Scranton women's soccer team will look to continue its win streak on Saturday when they host Vassar College at Weiss Field at 7:00 PM.
