Mike Finley (New Milford, N.J. / Don Bosco Prep) and
Matt Sherry (Glenside, Pa. / La Salle College) set new program records in the 100 IM and 50 fly respectively as The University of Scranton men's swimming team posted a pair of wins in a Landmark Conference tri-meet against Wilkes and Moravian on Saturday afternoon.
The Royals took down Wilkes 228-33 and toppled Moravian 231-9.Â
Scranton took the top three spots to start the day in the 200 medley relay as the A team took first at 1:38.36, the B team placed second at 1:43.50 and the C team earned third at 1:46.67.Â
Sophomore
Jimmy O'Malley (Maple Glen, Pa. / LaSalle College) won the 1000 free with a swim of 10:25.56.Â
In his first collegiate meet, freshman
Conor Doogan (Shrewsbury, N.J. / Christian Brothers Academy) won the 200 free at 1:53.74. Fellow freshman
Alex Iannone (Moscow, Pa. / Scranton Prep) also won his first event as a Royal as he took first place in the 50 back with a swim of 26.50.
Freshman
Chris Clarke (Elizabeth, N.J. / Elizabeth) took home his first collegiate win in the 50 breaststroke as he edged out fellow freshman
Sam Peters (West Hartford, Conn. / Northwest Catholic) by three tenths of a second.Â
Sherry earned his first win of the day in the 100 fly as he swam a time of 53.52 for Scranton.
Senior
Scott Majka (Marysville, Pa. / Trinity) beat Finley by a tenth of a second in the 50 free to secure first place at 22.54.Â
In the men's one meter dive, senior
Alexander Drake (Flemington, N.J. / Hunterdon Central) placed first overall with a score of 149.10.
Majka won his second event of the day in the 100 free as he was the only competitor to break 50 seconds with a swim of 49.47.Â
Finley picked up his first win of the day in the 100 back as he cruised to victory at 55.18.Â
In the men's 100 breaststroke freshman
Thomas Nappi (West Caldwell, N.J. / James Caldwell) booked a 1:04.28 to take first place.
O'Malley swam his way to another victory in the 500 free as he clocked in at 5:03.59.Â
Sherry's swim of 23.64 in the 50 fly earned him a spot in the Scranton record books as it marked the fastest swim in the event in program history.Â
Finley followed up with a record breaking performance of his own in the 100 IM as he swam a 55.98 for a new program record.
The Scranton men completed the day with the top three finishes in the 200 free relay as the A team place first at 1:35.17, the B team took second at 1:35.68 and the C team notched third at 1:35.99.
The men's swimming team returns to action next Saturday, October 21 for a dual-meet at Marywood at 11:00 AM.Â
