SCRANTON, Pa. – Senior Katie Redding (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) broke the program's all-time assists record and The University of Scranton field hockey team (12-2, 6-0 Landmark) notched a 3-0 shutout of the Juniata College Eagles (5-9, 2-4 Landmark) on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Weiss Field in Scranton.
Redding tallied a pair of assists on the day and now has 23 in her career, surpassing the previous record of 22 that had held by Alyssa Fania '14.
The Royals also remain tied atop the Landmark Conference standings with Susquehanna with three regular season games remaining.
Both sides held strong defensively for much of the first quarter and Scranton eventually took the lead in the final minute of the quarter when senior Bridget Abraldes (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) tipped home Redding's shot off a penalty corner to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Redding had a pair of chances in the early stages of the second quarter, but Juniata goalie Brittany McMullen made a pair of saves that kept it 1-0 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Royals continued to threaten with a trio of penalty corner opportunities, though things remained 1-0 at the end of three. In the 48th minute, junior Reagan Dolan (Broomall, Pa./Bonner & Prendergast) sent a feed across the circle following the penalty corner and fellow junior Lauren Franco (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson) knocked it home to extend the lead to 2-0. Just 1:22 later, Redding found Abraldes at the near post and the latter registered her second goal of the day.
The goal was Franco's first of the season, while Abraldes has nine goals on the year and has recorded three multi-goal games.
Scranton held a 15-2 shot advantage led by seven from Redding and junior goalie Gianna Travia (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) denied the Eagles' only shot on goal for her fourth shutout of the season.
Prior to the game, the Royals honored the senior class of Abraldes, Redding, Elle Collins (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central), Cori Davis (Millerstown, Pa./Greenwood), Jenna Leonhardt (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) and Kait McGarry (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley) for their contributions to the program over the last four years.
Head coach Colleen Moyer's team will hit the road to take on Drew in a Landmark clash on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
