Baquerizo Breaks 100 IM Record as Women's Swimming & Diving Cruises Past Wilkes and Moravian in Landmark Tri-Meet

Wilkes Barre, PA -- Senior Giavanna Baquerizo (Maywood, N.J. /Immaculate Heart Academy) broke her own record in the 100 IM as The University of Scranton women's swimming team opened up its 2023-24 campaign with a Landmark Conference Tri-Meet sweep of Wilkes and Moravian on Saturday afternoon in Wilkes Barre, PA.

The Royals posted a 230-26 win over Wilkes and took down Moravian 227-21.

Scranton started off the day strong taking first and second in the 200 medley relay to open up the meet. Senior Jaclyn Papalski (Flemington, N.J. / Hunterdon Central) won the 1000 free with a swim of 11:29.96. 

Junior Aviah Dahlgren (Honesdale, Pa. / Wyoming Seminary) won the 200 free as she booked a 2:04.35. In the 50 back, senior Alyssa Benzija (Kinnelon, N.J. / Kinnelon) took first with a time of 29.49. 

Freshman Kim Gingrass (Baldwin, N.Y. / Sacred Heart Academy) earned a first place finish in her first collegiate meet as she won the 50 breaststroke with a swim of 33.44. 

Junior Alanna Kelly (Yonkers, N.Y. / School of the Holy Child) edged out senior Claudia O'Reilly ( Warren, N.J. Watchung Hills Regional) by less than a second to win the 100 fly at 1:03.60.

In the 50 free, freshman Gianna Horen (Oceanside, N.Y. / Oceanside) took first place with a time of 26.24. Junior Kristie Shieck (Rockville Centre, / N.Y. South Side) won the one meter dive with a score of 181.73. 

Benzija picked up her second win of the day in the 100 free as she clocked in at 57.01. Dahlgren matched Benzija and notched her second win in the 100 back with a time of 1:03.12.

Kelly and Papalski also earned their second first place finishes of the meet as they won the 100 breaststroke (1:11.21) and 50 free (5:39.89) respectively.  O'Reilly notched her first win of the day in the 50 fly with a swim of 28.43.

Baquerizo beat her own school record in the 100 IM with a swim of 1:05.11. 

Scranton finished out the day with the top three times in the 200 free relay as the A team finished first at 1:48.34, the C team finished second at 1:49.03 and the B team finished third at 1:52.78.

The women's swimming team returns to action at Marywood next Saturday, October 21 at 11:00 AM.
