Men's Soccer Drops Season Finale to Moravian, 2-0

SCRANTON, Pa. -- Moravian's Ben Scary scored a goal in each half and The University of Scranton men's soccer team (8-4-5, 2-3-4 Landmark) dropped a 2-0 decision to the Greyhounds (6-6-5, 4-4-1 Landmark) on Saturday afternoon at Weiss Field in Scranton.

With the setback, the Royals see their 2023 season come to an end at 8-4-5.

Scranton recorded the first chance of the game in the third minute on a shot by senior Dylan Estevez (Garnerville, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) that was turned away by Moravian goalie Andrew Remias and the hosts would continue to threaten in the early going, but things remained scoreless after junior Ciaran Corr's (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) attempt deflected off the crossbar in the 13th minute. Remias added a save in the 23rd minute when junior Adam Havens (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) sent a shot to the far post. Moravian was able to take a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute as Scary converted a penalty kick attempt and continued to hold the one-goal edge at the half.

The Royals continued to search for the equalizer in the early stages of the second half as Corr had a pair of chances in the 46th and 49th minutes, but Remias made a save and the other attempt sailed just high. In the 66th minute, sophomore Gavin Scavino (Succasunna, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) saw his shot deflect off the crossbar. The Greyhounds were then able to extend the lead in the 75th minute when Scary scored his second of the game and the visitors were able to hold on for the victory despite a handful of chances for the Royals over the final 15 minutes including a header by freshman Drew Paxson (Elkins Park, Pa./Abington) that was cleared off the goal line by a Moravian defender in the 83rd minute.

Head coach Matt Pivirotto's team held a 19-8 shot advantage led by six from Corr and sophomore goalie Charlie Smith (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) recorded three saves on the day.
