Women's Soccer Blanks Moravian on Senior Day; Secures No. 1 Seed in Landmark Tournament

SCRANTON, Pa. -- The University of Scranton women's soccer team (11-3-3, 8-1 Landmark) scored a goal in each half and clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference Tournament with a 2-0 victory over the Moravian University Greyhounds (8-4-4, 5-2-2 Landmark) on Saturday afternoon at Weiss Field in Scranton.

Scranton will host the winner of the No. 4 seed Greyhounds and No. 5 seed Elizabethtown in a semifinal on Thursday night at Weiss Field with start time yet to be determined.

Senior Emily Tantala (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) opened the scoring for the Royals just 1:20 into the game as she collected a loose ball near the top of the 18-yard box and buried a shot for her fourth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead. Scranton nearly extended the lead in the seventh minute as a shot by senior Niamh Healy (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee) was turned away by Moravian goalie Payce Korpics and held strong defensively through the remainder of the half as they held the Greyhounds to just one shot through the opening 45 minutes.

Moravian had a pair of chances early in the second half, but junior goalie Nicole Olson (Stoughton, Mass./Ursuline Academy) made a pair of saves in the 49th and 51st minutes that kept it a 1-0 game for the time being. The two Greyhound attempts were sandwiched around a shot by senior Mary Haggerty (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) that ricocheted off the crossbar in the 50th minute. Perhaps the best chance of the second half for Moravian came in the 82nd minute when Olson denied a free kick attempt by the Greyhounds' Hailey Scaff. The Royals then found an insurance goal in the 84th minute as junior Emily Bannon (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) played a pass to sophomore Morgan Griffin (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore) who slotted home a shot from near the top of the box to extend the lead to 2-0.

The Royals held a 16-6 advantage in shots behind five from Healy and three from Bannon, while Olson recorded four saves in her sixth shutout of the season.

Prior to the game, the Royals honored the senior class of Haggerty, Healy, Tantala, Sam Lowe (Parsippany, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's), Alaina McLaughlin (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan), Claire Mulholland (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee), Kaylee Murphy (Lafayette Hill, Pa./William Penn Charter), Gabrielle Richetti (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) and Devyn Tanajewski (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional)
