Volleyball Splits Pair of Matches with Clarkson & No. 24 Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. – The University of Scranton volleyball team (15-10) split a pair of matches with Clarkson (12-10) and No. 24 Ithaca (21-4) on Saturday afternoon at Ben Light Gymnasium in Ithaca.

Scranton 3, Clarkson 0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-23)

Scranton led 11-8 in the first set before taking seven of the next eight points and a Clarkson attack error made it an 18-9 advantage. Clarkson was unable to get any closer than seven the rest of the way and the Royals recorded four of the final five points in the 25-13 victory.

In the second set, the Golden Knights led for much of the early going and held a 16-13 lead before nine straight Royals' points including a pair of kills by senior Stephanie Margolies (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) that made it 22-16. Margolies added another kill and a service error followed by a set error helped close out the 25-19 victory for the Royals.

The two sides traded points for much of the third set and Scranton held a 15-14 edge before the Golden Knights later rallied with six straight points to take a 21-18 lead. From there, the Royals took four of the next five points to regain the lead and a pair of Clarkson attack errors sealed the sweep for Scranton.

Margolies and sophomore Deanna Whelpley (Congers, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) had 10 kills apiece to pace the Royals, while freshman Cammi Quirk (Oakland, N.J./Ridgewood) added 17 assists and seven digs in the victory.

Sophomore Maddie Forry (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) added 11 digs, seven assists and two service aces.

Ithaca 3, Scranton 1 (25-20, 12-25, 18-25, 23-25)

The first set proved to be close throughout and the Royals used consecutive points including a kill by Whelpley to take a 20-16 lead. Head coach Jamie Spangler's team then registered five of the final seven points and Margolies delivered a kill to seal the 25-20 win.

Ithaca led 10-7 in the early stages of the second set and then broke things open with a run that resulted in a 19-9 advantage en route to the 25-12 victory.

The third set was tied at six apiece before the Bombers took seven of the next eight points to take a 13-7 lead. Through the remainder of the set, Scranton put together several comeback efforts and fought within four on three different occasions but Ithaca was able to close out the 25-18 victory.

Scranton held a 19-13 lead in the fourth set after a service ace from Quirk, but Ithaca then took the next six points to tie the match at 19 apiece. From there, the Royals grabbed a 22-21 advantage before Ithaca recorded four of the next five points in the 25-23 win.

Margolies and juniors Sophia Hadjiyane (Huntington, N.Y./John Glenn) and Erin Keaveney (Collegeville, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) led a balanced attack for the Royals with nine kills apiece. Quirk and junior Gianna Detorie (Rumford, R.I./Bishop Feehan) recorded 17 assists apiece, while Forry added 13 digs.

The University of Scranton volleyball team is back in action on Sunday, Nov. 5 at NYU for a pair of matches against Manhattanville (12:30 p.m.) and the host Violets (3 p.m.).
