DALLAS, Pa. – The University of Scranton field hockey team (9-2) scored both goals over the final two quarters and head coach Colleen Moyer registered her 200th career win as the Royals blanked Misericordia (2-7) by a 2-0 score on Tuesday night at Mangelsdorf Field in Dallas.
Moyer became the winningest coach in program history during the 2019 season and is now the only head coach in program history with 200 career wins.
Scranton had a series of chances in the first quarter and junior Reagan Dolan (Broomall, Pa./Bonner & Prendergast) had a pair of opportunities in the fifth minute to go along with three penalty corner chances, but things remained scoreless. Freshman Maggie Keys (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) had her shot turned away by Misericordia goalie Haley Harper in the 17th minute and then Royals' junior goalie Gianna Travia (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) registered consecutive saves in the 20th minute to keep the contest deadlocked at zero.
Misericordia nearly took the lead in the 36th minute, but sophomore defender Kiera Lamb (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) cleared a shot off the goal mouth and Scranton's defense blocked consecutive shots a minute later. The Royals were able to take the lead in the final minute of the third quarter when Keys converted a penalty stroke goal for a 1-0 edge. In the fourth quarter, sophomore Annie Shaw (Exton, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) had her shot turned away by Harper in the 52nd minute, but then added an insurance goal in the 55th minute when she buried a rebound after an initial shot by Dolan.
The goal was Shaw's fourth of the season and she has now recorded a point in four of her last five games.
The Royals held a 16-8 shot advantage in the contest led by five from senior Katie Redding (Havertown, Pa./Haverford), while Travia made a pair of saves to notch her third shutout of the season.
Harper recorded five saves on the night for the Cougars.
Scranton returns home to host Goucher in a Landmark Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon with action slated to get underway at 1 p.m.
