SCRANTON, Pa. – The No. 6 University of Scranton women's basketball team (2-0) used a dominant 18-4 first quarter and rolled to a 76-35 victory over the Marywood Pacers (1-2) in non-conference action on Monday night at Insalaco Arena in Scranton.
With the victory, the Lady Royals improve to 41-0 all-time against the Pacers.
Freshman Meghan Lamanna (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) opened the scoring for Scranton with five straight points as part of a 9-0 run to start the game and graduate student Victoria Toomey (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) capped the run with a jumper at the 8:10 mark. Following a Marywood bucket, fellow graduate student Hannah Angelini (Baldwin Place, N.Y./Somers) tallied five straight points of her own which led to the 18-4 lead after one. The Lady Royals held a 26-11 edge with 6:40 left in the second when a Lamanna layup ignited a 19-2 run that was highlighted by three straight triples from senior Maddie Hartnett (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) for a 45-13 lead. Angelini later finished the first half scoring with a basket in the final seconds that gave the visitors a 47-16 advantage at the break.
The Lady Royals began the third period with 10 straight points from five different players and led 57-16 before a late Pacer run cut the deficit to 59-25 at the end of three. In the fourth quarter, freshman Katie Gorski (Pine Brook, N.J./Montville Township) tallied seven points and Scranton easily preserved the 76-35 victory.
Sophomore Kaci Kranson (Scranton, Pa./Holy Cross) led a balanced scoring attack for the Lady Royals with 13 points and eight rebounds as five different players registered seven or more points. Hartnett added 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting, while Angelini tallied nine points and Gorski and Lamanna contributed seven apiece.
Rachel McDonald had 12 points to pace Marywood in the setback.
As a team, Scranton shot 41.0% (32-of-78) from the floor and 25.9% (7-of-27) from the three-point line, while holding Marywood to 30.0% (12-of-40) from the field and 30.8% (4-of-13) from deep.
The Lady Royals also forced 22 Marywood turnovers in the contest and Kranson recorded three steals to go along with a pair from fellow sophomores Kaeli Romanowski (Lake Ariel, Pa./Western Wayne) and Jenna Sloan (Central Square, N.Y./Bishop Grimes). Romanowski chipped in with two points, six boards, six assists and two steals.
Head coach Ben O'Brien's squad will host TCNJ in the 2023-24 home opener on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. at the John Long Center.
