Box Score ASHLAND, VA (March 4, 2023) -- The University of Scranton men's basketball team saw its 2022-23 season come to an end on Saturday night as they were defeated by #1 Randolph-Macon in the second round of the 2023 NCAA DIII Men's Basketball Tournament, 63-41.
Scranton came out strong to start the game as they held a 6-2 lead at the 16:14 mark thanks to a pair of threes from graduate student Jackson Danzig* (Clarks Green, Pa. / Abington Heights). Following a media timeout, the Yellow Jackets went on an 11-0 run which forced the Royals to take a timeout.
The Royals battled through injuries in the middle stages of the first half and trailed Randolph-Macon 30-14 at halftime.
Sophomore Will McLoughlin (Glen Rock, N.J. / Glen Rock) got Scranton on the board first to start the second half as he scored back-to-back layups to cut the Yellow Jackets' lead to 12. Randolph-Macon began to pull away in the middle stages of the second half as they extened their lead to 20 with 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
The Yellow Jackets went on to win by a score of 63-41 and advance to the Sweet 16. Neither team shot well from three, but Randolph-Macon won the battle on the boards 39-24.
Danzig led the Royals in scoring with 11 points on the game to go along with 7 rebounds. Freshman Jon Spatola (Marlboro, N.J. / Marlboro) finished with eight points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals for Scranton.
Daniel Mbangue of Randolph-Macon led all scorers with 16 points in the contest.
The Royals finish the year with an overall record of 21-8, which marks the programs' first 20 win season since 2018-19. During the momentus run, Scranton captured its first Landmark Conference title in six years, while head coach Carl Danzig picked up his 400th career win.
