Baseball Drops Extra Inning Heartbreaker to Dickinson

Box Score

SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton baseball team (3-3) dropped an 11-7 heartbreaker to the Dickinson Red Devils (2-3-1) in 11 innings on Sunday afternoon at Volpe Field in Scranton.

This marked the first meeting between the two programs since Feb. 27, 2016.

Things were tied at seven apiece after 10 innings, but Dickinson plated four in the top of the 11th as back-to-back walks put two runners on and Dylan Posencheg plated the go-ahead run with an RBI single. The Red Devils also added a two-run homer later in the inning for a pair of insurance runs.

Freshman righty Ryan Boyd (Millwood, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) was dealt the loss for the Royals as he allowed three runs on two hits and fanned four over 2 1/3 IP of relief.

Joey Sangiuolo tossed three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win for Dickinson.

The Red Devils grabbed an early 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two more in the second before Scranton began to battle back to take the lead. In the home half of the third, an infield single and two walks loaded the bases which set the stage for a hit batsmen to bring in a run and an RBI single from junior John Zarnowski (East Brunswick, N.J./St. Joseph's) that cut the lead to 3-2.

Senior right-hander Daniel Johnson (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Immaculata) got the start for the Royals and allowed three runs on three hits while walking five and fanning one in three innings of work.

Scranton then tacked on four more runs in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead for the time being as fellow junior Corey Zientek (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazleton Area) delivered a two-run double and Zarnowski struck again with a two-run single.

The Red Devils' Ethan Hamilton allowed the six runs on seven hits to go along with two walks and four strikeouts in 3 2/3 IP.

Dickinson added solo runs in the fifth and seventh innings before taking a 7-6 lead in the eighth with a pair of unearned runs. The Royals answered with a run in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game as freshman Conor Campbell (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) drew a leadoff walk, advanced to third on a throwing error charged to Sangiuolo and scored on a sac fly from sophomore Jake Elston (New Milford, Conn./Canterbury School).

Campbell (2-5, 2 R) and Zarnowski (2-4, 3 RBI) both registered multi-hit games for head coach Mike Bartoletti's team.

The Royals are back in action on Saturday for a doubleheader against Worcester State to begin the team's Spring Break slate in Myrtle Beach. First pitch of game one is slated for 6 p.m.
