BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The University of Scranton field hockey team (5-1, 1-0 Landmark) scored all three goals in the first quarter and cruised to a 3-0 victory over the Moravian Greyhounds (1-4, 0-1) in the conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at John Makuvek Field in Bethlehem.
Head coach Colleen Moyer's team grabbed an early lead in the ninth minute when junior Reagan Dolan (Broomall, Pa./Bonner & Prendergast) blasted a shot from the top of the circle following a penalty corner by senior Cori Davis (Millerstown, Pa./Greenwood). Nearly three minutes later, the Royals extended the lead to 2-0 as Davis fed a pass to classmate Katie Redding (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) who was in front of the cage and buried her team-leading sixth goal of the year. In the 14th minute, sophomore Julia Downing (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) made it a 3-0 game as she took a pass from sophomore Kiera Lamb (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) and beat Moravian goalie Maia Machado with a shot at the near post. Scranton's defense continued to hold strong and survived three penalty corner opportunities by the Greyhounds in the 25th minute to take a 3-0 lead into the locker room.
Redding nearly extended the lead in the 31st minute, but her shot was turned away on a defensive save by Moravian's Jenna Segrave and Scranton was able to cruise to the 3-0 victory as they held the Greyhounds to just five shots over the final 30 minutes of action.
The Royals held a 19-8 shot advantage in the contest led by six from Redding and five from Dolan. Junior goalie Gianna Travia (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) tallied a pair of saves for her first shutout of the season.
Scranton will host Vassar in a non-conference matchup on Thursday night at Weiss Field with action slated to get underway at 7 p.m.
