BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The No. 7/9 University of Scranton women's basketball team (13-1, 6-1 Landmark) held Moravian to just 25.5% shooting from the floor and cruised to a 64-42 victory over the Greyhounds (5-9, 4-3 Landmark) on Wednesday night at Johnston Hall in Bethlehem.
This marks the Lady Royals' 18th consecutive win over Moravian dating back to the 2016-17 season.
Senior Maddie Hartnett (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) scored the first seven points of the game for Scranton and sophomore Kaeli Romanowski (Lake Ariel, Pa./Western Wayne) then sank a jumper for an early 9-2 edge at the 5:39 mark. Romanowski and freshman Meghan Lamanna (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) combined to hit a trio of three-pointers later in the quarter and a pair of free throws from Romanowski opened up a 20-6 lead after one. In the early stages of the second quarter, sophomore Jenna Sloan (Central Square, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) and senior Allie Lynch (Villanova, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame de Namur) made baskets on consecutive possessions for a 24-6 advantage for the time being. Both defenses held strong over much of the remainder of the period and head coach Ben O'Brien's team eventually took a 32-16 lead into the locker room.
Holding a 38-19 edge in the third quarter, Lynch connected on a jumper to ignite a 16-2 run and graduate student Kyra Quigley (Drexel Hill, Pa./Sacred Heart Academy Bryn Mawr) capped things off with a layup for a 54-21 lead at the 1:57 mark. Scranton led 56-24 after three quarters and Moravian was unable to get any closer than 22 the rest of the way as the visitors preserved the victory.
Romanowski led all scorers with a season-high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while Hartnett and Lamanna added nine apiece and Quigley came through with eight. Sophomore Kaci Kranson (Scranton, Pa./Holy Cross) contributed seven points and seven rebounds for the Lady Royals.
Lizzie Lustig paced the Greyhounds with 10 points in the setback.
Scranton shot 40.9% (27-of-66) from the floor and 25.0% (5-of-20) from deep in the contest to go along with limiting Moravian to 25.5% (13-of-51) from the field and 37.5% (6-of-16) from long range.
The Lady Royals also forced 23 Moravian turnovers and both Lamanna and Sloan tallied four steals apiece.
Kranson's seven rebounds were a game-high and Hartnett added six of her own as Scranton held a 46-31 edge on the glass.
The University of Scranton women's basketball team returns to action on Friday night at No. 13/14 Catholic for a Landmark Conference showdown that will get underway at 7 p.m.
