Preview: No. 9 Women's Soccer vs Marywood (NCAA First Round)

The University of Scranton women's soccer team will battle the Marywood University Pacers in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.

No. 9 Scranton

  • Record: 17-1-2
  • Scranton defeated Lycoming College 3-0 in the title game, winning their fifth straight Landmark Conference Championship.
  • Scranton leads the Landmark in both goals per game (2.55) and goals against average (.30), a feat they have achieved in every season since 2021.
  • Head coach Colleen Pivirotto is in her 17th season at Scranton. Pivirotto guided the Royals to their fifth consecutive Landmark Championship win and the 11th in program history and has Scranton in its eighth straight NCAA Tournament.

Royals to Watch

  • Graduate Student Niamh Healy, who has won Landmark Offensive Player of the Year in three straight seasons from 2022-2024, currently leads the Landmark Conference in goals (14), points (32) and game-winning goals (8). 
  • Freshman Aileen Carr, who won Landmark Rookie of the Year this season, anchors the defense that leads the Landmark and ranks 8th in the nation with a .30 GAA. 
  • The Royals had seven All-Conference selections in 2024. Healy, Carr, graduate students Mary Haggerty and Claire Mulholland, and senior Nicole Olson were first team selections, while graduate student Emily Tantala and senior Emily Bannon earned second team honors.

Marywood

  • Record: 15-3-2
  • Marywood defeated No. 2 seed Marymount University, 2-0, in the Atlantic East Conference Championship Game, winning their third AEC Title in program history.
  • Marywood ranks first in the Atlantic East Conference in goals per game (3.00), and the Pacers lead the AEC and are tied for second in the nation in goals against average at .20. 
  • Head coach Richard Owens, in his second year at the helm of the program, led the team to a championship game in 2023 and an Atlantic East Conference Title this season, the third in program history.

Pacers to Watch

  • Graduate student Josephine Sorce won AEC Offensive Player of the Year award. Sorce started in 20 games and led the conference in points (44), goals (15) and assists (14).
  • Defensively, graduate student Britlyn Higgins anchored a defense that ranked second best in the country in goals against average. Higgins earned the AEC Defensive Player of Year award and scored one goal while adding two assists in 20 games played.

NCAA Tournament History

  • Scranton is making its eighth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and the 23rd in the program's history. 
  • Marywood makes its first appearance in the tournament since 2022. 

Inside the Series

  • Scranton leads the all-time series against Marywood 10-0. The Royals are 2-0 against the Pacers since 2022, outscoring Marywood 10-1 in those games.
  • Most recently, the Royals defeated Marywood, 4-1, on Sept. 6, 2023. In that game, Tantala scored twice, while Healy and Haggerty each scored once for the Royals.
