No. 3 Women's Basketball Cruises Past NJCU, 76-40

SCRANTON, PA -- The University of Scranton women's basketball team defeated New Jersey City University 76-40 on Saturday night at the John Long Center.

The Basics

  • Final Score: No. 3 Scranton 76, NJCU 40 
  • Records: No. 3 Scranton 2-0, NJCU 1-2

How it Happened

  • Sophomore Meghan Lamanna opened the game with a three-pointer from the right wing off a pass from junior Kaci Kranson.
  • Sophomore Katie Gorski found Kranson in the left corner for a three-pointer that gave the Royals an 18-4 lead.
  • Gorski blocked a Gothic Knight's buzzer-beater attempt to end the quarter with the Royals up, 25-6.
  • In the second quarter, graduate student Maddie Hartnett drained a three from the left wing to put Scranton ahead by 20.
  • Sophomore Elizabeth Bennett made a turnaround jumper off a feed from classmate Natalie Stoupakis, increasing the cushion 38-16. 
  • Gorski converted two free-throws, sending the Royals to the locker room with a 42-16 lead.
  • To start the second half, Kranson drove the basket and using a spin move got past her defender to strike first for the Royals.
  • Hartnett found graduate student Kyra Quigley who shook her defender and banked a low-post jumper to put Scranton ahead 46-18.
  • Three minutes into the quarter, junior Kaeli Romanowski grabbed a rebound under the net, made the put back with contact and converted the three-point play.
  • Romanowski then found Bennett under the basket with two minutes remaining to give Scranton a 35-point lead.
  • At 4:42 in the fourth, Lamanna grabbed an offensive rebound and found freshman Marisa Francione under the basket who finished through contact.
  • Stoupakis made two free throws to end the game, 76-40.

Top Performers

  • Lamanna led all scorers with 17 points, followed by Kranson who scored 16 points and recorded seven rebounds. 
  • Quigley dominated the boards with 11 rebounds. 
  • Hartnett dished out a game-high five assists. 

Inside the Box Score

  • The Gothic Knights only scored one field goal in the first quarter, finding their other four points from the free-throw line.
  • Quigley was a perfect 5-5 from the field, and the Royals posts a 47.3 FG% as a team.
  • The Royals out rebounded the Gothic Knights 51-26.
