Preview: No. 9 Women's Soccer vs No. 19 Wesleyan (NCAA Second Round)

The University of Scranton women's soccer team will battle the Wesleyan University Cardinals in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday at Weiss Field in Scranton, with action slated to begin at 3:00 PM.

NCAA Round 2 Game Info:

  • The game will take place on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 3:00 PM at Weiss Field in Scranton, PA.

    • $5 - Seniors, students, children 3 and up

Scranton

  • Record: 18-1-2
  • Scranton defeated Marywood Univesity in the first round of the NCAA tournament Saturday, 3-1.
  • Scranton leads the Landmark in both goals per game (2.57) and goals against average (.33), a feat they have achieved in every season since 2021.
  • Head coach Colleen Pivirotto is in her 17th season at Scranton. Pivirotto guided the Royals to their fifth consecutive Landmark Championship win and the 11th in program history and has Scranton in its eighth straight NCAA appearance.

Royals to Watch

  • Graduate Student Niamh Healy, who has won Landmark Offensive Player of the Year in three straight seasons from 2022-2024, currently leads the Landmark Conference in goals (16), points (36) and game-winning goals (8). 
  • Freshman Aileen Carr, who won Landmark Rookie of the Year this season, anchors the defense that leads the Landmark and ranks 12th in the nation with a .33 GAA. 
  • The Royals had seven All-Conference selections in 2024. Healy, Carr, graduate student Mary Haggerty, graduate student Claire Mulholland, and senior Nicole Olson were first team selections, and graduate student Emily Tantala and senior Emily Bannon earned second team honors.

Wesleyan

  • Record: 14-1-3
  • Wesleyan defeated SUNY Brockport 4-1 in round one of the NCAA Tournament Saturday to advance into the second round.
  • Wesleyan ranks fifth in the NESCAC in goals per game (1.94) and third in goals against average (.50).
  • Head coach Eva Meredith has been at the helm of the Cardinals women's soccer program since 2004. Meredith won NESCAC Coach of the Year this season, which is the second time in her career she has earned the honor.

Cardinals to Watch

  • Senior captain Katie O'Connell leads the Cardinals with 19 points on five goals and nine assists. O'Connell scored one goal and one assist in the team's round one match against SUNY Brockport. O'Connell was named to the NESCAC All-Conference First Team in 2024.
  • In goal, junior Molly Brumbach has posted a 0.54 GAA and an 11-1-3 record in 2024. Brumbach has tallied 53 saves, including three in the round one matchup against SUNY Brockport. Brumbach won the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year award in 2024 and All-Conference First Team honors.
  • Wesleyan had six All-Conference selections in 2024. Brumbach, O'Connell and defender Tori Rideau-Winds earned First Team honors, while midfielder Waverly Meyers, defender Caty Clements and forward Maria Utz were selected to the second team. Freshman Sheridan Snow won NESCAC Rookie of the Year honors.

NCAA Tournament Facts

  • Scranton is making its eighth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and the 23rd in the program's history. 
  • Wesleyan is in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year on an at-large bid.
