Preview: No. 9 Women's Soccer vs Trinity (TX) (Sweet 16)

The University of Scranton women's soccer team will battle the Trinity University Tigers in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday at Weiss Field with kickoff set for 3:30 PM.

NCAA Sweet 16 Game Info

  • The game will take place on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 3:30 PM at Weiss Field in Scranton, PA.

Scranton

  • Record: 19-1-2
  • Scranton defeated Marywood University 3-1 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and then beat No. 19 Wesleyan University 2-0 in the second round.
  • Scranton leads the Landmark Conference in both goals per game (2.55) and goals against average (.318), a feat they have achieved in every season since 2021. The Royals rank sixth in the country in goals against average at .318.
  • Head coach Colleen Pivirotto is in her 17th season at Scranton. Pivirotto and the Royals return to the Sweet 16 for the third time in the last four seasons and look to advance to the Elite Eight for the first time since Pivirotto was a player at Scranton in 2003. 

Royals to Watch

  • Senior forward Samantha Goffice has been on a tear in the postseason for Scranton, recording at least one point in each of the team's four playoff games. Goffice has tallied seven points on two goals and three assists in four postseason games this season.
  • Senior goalkeeper Nicole Olson has posted a 0.33 goals against average this season with an .868 save percentage. The Royals defense ranks sixth in the nation with a .318 GAA, climbing six spots from where they were ranked a week ago. Olson and the defensive unit have allowed just one goal in four postseason games this year.

Trinity (TX)

  • Record: 17-1-3
  • Trinity defeated the reigning national champions Cal Lutheran in the first round, 1-0 and beat Pomona-Pitzer in penalty kicks in the second round, earning themselves a trip to the Sweet 16.
  • Trinity ranks fourth in the country in goals against average (.28), two spots ahead of Scranton. The Tigers score 2.29 goals per game.
  • Head coach Dylan Harrison is in his ninth season at the helm of this Tigers team. Harrison has led them to eight conference titles and eight NCAA appearances, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2016.

Tigers to Watch

  • The offense is led by senior Michaela Bosco, who is tied-fifth in the nation with 16 assists. Bosco leads the team with 26 points and has five goals in addition to her team-leading 16 helpers. 
  • Senior goalkeeper Lauryn Lewis has allowed just six goals all season, posting a 0.31 goals against average and a .900 save percentage this season. A 2024 All-SCAC first team selection, Lewis leads the defense that ranks fourth in the country in goals against average.

NCAA Tournament Facts

  • Scranton is making its eighth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and the 23rd in the program's history. This is the third time in four years that the Royals have made it to the Sweet 16.
  • Trinity secured a spot in the NCAA Tournament after winning their conference an earning an automatic bid. Like the Royals, the Tigers are in the Sweet 16 for the third time in the last four seasons.
