SCRANTON, Pa. – Graduate students Jacob Burgette (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) and Jeremiah Oakes (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) both registered four victories on the day to lead the efforts for The University of Scranton wrestling team on Saturday at the John Long Center in Scranton.
The Royals notched victories over Hunter (54-6), Utica (44-9) and Bergen Community College (41-10) and dropped a 38-15 decision to King's.
Scranton is now 7-7 in dual meets on the season.
Scranton 54, Hunter 6
Freshman Joseph Cappello (Wood Ridge, N.J./Paramus Catholic) opened things up for the Royals at 125 pounds with a pin of Michael Douglas in just 0:18 and Scranton tallied a total of six pins in the lopsided victory. At 149 pounds, sophomore Kosta Mavrikidis (Warren, N.J./Paramus Catholic) took down Elijah Parziale in 1:48 and freshman Aidan Veirun (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) pinned Nicholas D'Erasmo at 4:34 in the 157 pound bout.
Burgette pinned Hunter's Therrol Lafayette at the 1:38 mark in the 165 pound bout and Oakes matched the fastest pin of his career with a fall versus Hadi Rehman at 0:29 at 174 pounds. Junior Jonathan Sklavounos (Washington Twp., N.J./Westwood) closed things out with a pin of Alfredo Tapia at the 1:40 mark in the 197 pound bout.
Scranton 44, Utica 9
Cappello began the match with an 18-2 technical fall victory and sophomore Shkeb Nadir (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) pinned Utica's Billy Beseth at 141 pounds in 4:12 to open up an early 11-6 lead for the Royals. Veirun recorded a 14-10 decision in the 157 pound bout and Burgette pinned Logan Krouse in 4:07 to help Scranton extend the advantage.
The Royals then won the final four matches via forfeit en route to the 44-9 victory.
Scranton 41, Bergen 10
Following consecutive forfeit victories to begin the match, Mavrikidis rolled to an 18-1 technical fall victory over Ayoub Sauzer at 149 pounds. Veirun and Burgette both added forfeit victories before Oakes pinned Joshua Alvarez in 0:29.
Freshman Sean Cordaro (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) closed out the match with a pin of Xavier Delgado at the 3:28 mark in the heavyweight bout.
King's 38, Scranton 15
Junior Matthew DiGennaro (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) pinned the Monarchs' Cole Anderson in 1:30 at the 133 pound bout and Burgette rolled to a 17-0 technical fall victory over Alex Ballantyne at 165 pounds. Oakes registered a 12-0 major decision against Connor Wroblenski in the 174 pound bout.
Scranton will host Penn College and St. John Fisher in a tri-match to close out the regular season on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m.
