Johnson Breaks Career Wins Record as Baseball Splits Doubleheader at ETown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Graduate student right-hander Daniel Johnson (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Immaculata) got the win in game one to break the program's career wins record and The University of Scranton baseball team (8-3, 2-1 Landmark) split a doubleheader with the Elizabethtown Blue Jays (8-6, 1-2 Landmark) on Sunday at Boyd Stadium in Elizabethtown.

The Royals notched a 10-6 victory in game one, but dropped a 14-4 decision in the nightcap.

Scranton broke the game with five runs in the eighth inning and clinched the series with the 10-6 victory after taking the opener by a score of 5-4 on Saturday.

ETown struck first with a run in the top of the second inning, but the Royals answered with two in the third on a sac fly from sophomore Aidan Casey (Silver Beach, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) and an RBI single from senior Matthew Querey (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) that made it a 2-1 game for the time being.

The Royals tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning courtesy of an RBI double off the bat of junior Jake Elston (New Milford, Conn./Canterbury School) and senior Jack Heineman's (Abington, Pa./LaSalle College) RBI single.

Joey Smith was dealt the loss for the Blue Jays as he allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits to go along with two walks and two strikeouts in 5 1/3 IP.

Johnson recorded his third win of the season for Scranton as he allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits while walking two and fanning five over five plus innings. The victory marked the 19th of his career, surpassing the previous record of 18 that had been set by Drew Morano (1989-92).

ETown got a run back in the sixth inning and two unearned runs in the seventh to cut the deficit to one at 5-4.

However, Scranton was able to answer with five two-out runs in the eighth inning including sophomore Conor Campbell's (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) two-run single. Querey also drew a bases-loaded walk in the inning and later scored on a wild pitch that extended the lead to 10-4.

Junior righty Dominic Chieffalo (Norristown, Pa./Malvern Prep) fanned three over 2 2/3 IP of relief and sophomore righty Logan Mason (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) tossed a scoreless ninth to preserve the victory.

Casey (2-4, RBI, R) and Elston (3-4, 2B, RBI, 2 R) both recorded multi-hit games for Scranton.

The Blue Jays took control of the game with three runs apiece in the third and fifth innings as the Royals dropped a 14-4 decision in game two on Sunday.

Scranton struck first with a pair in the first inning as senior John Zarnowski (East Brunswick, N.J./St. Joseph's) knocked in a run with an RBI double and classmate Joe Lisicky (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) plated Campbell with a sac fly.

ETown took the lead with three in the third including Quinten Perilli's two-run shot and added a solo run in the fourth that made it a 4-2 game in favor of the hosts.

Senior left-hander Matthew Moreira (Union, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) was tagged with the loss for Scranton as he gave up four runs on four hits to go along with two walks and a strikeout in 4.0 IP.

Kyle Mulville got the win for the Blue Jays after allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits while walking five and fanning three over 6 1/3 IP.

After a three-run fifth for ETown, the Royals battled back to trim the deficit to 7-4 behind Heineman's RBI single in the sixth and Lisicky's RBI fielder's choice in the seventh.

However, the Blue Jays then scored two runs in the seventh and five more in the eighth.

Senior southpaw Matt Roda (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) did not allow an earned run on two hits and struck out one in 2.0 IP of relief.

The Royals will host Wilkes in a Landmark Conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon at Volpe Field with first pitch slated for 4:30 p.m.
