Men's Lacrosse Falls to Cortland in Non-Conference Action

SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team (1-4) dropped a 14-7 decision to the Cortland Red Dragons (2-0) in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at Grady Field in Cortland.

Cortland scored in the opening minute of the game and senior Joe Boyle (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) quickly responded for the Royals with a feed from sophomore Jason Kozak (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) at the 13:31 mark to even things at one apiece. The Red Dragons then scored the next four goals to open up a 5-1 lead before Scranton used late tallies from senior Matthew McAree (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) and junior Colin Hughes (Massapequa, N.Y./Chaminade) to trim the deficit to 6-3 after one. In the second quarter, McAree found the back of the net with just 0:01 remaining that brought the Royals within four at 8-4.

After a goal from freshman Myles McCutcheon (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) in the early stages of the third quarter that made it a 9-5 game, Cortland scored the next five goals and was able to hold on for the victory despite two late goals from McAree.

McAree led the way for the Royals offensively with four goals and Boyle added a goal and two assists on the day.

Sophomore goalie Declan Allen (Garden City, N.Y./Millbrook) made 10 saves in net.

Sam Rothman paced Cortland with five goals and an assist.

The Royals will return home to host Montclair State on Wednesday night at Weiss Field with action slated to get underway at 7:30 p.m.
