Noble's Game One Gem Lifts Softball to Doubleheader Split with York (Pa.)

SCRANTON, Pa. – Sophomore Carley Noble (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) tossed a complete game shutout in game one and The University of Scranton softball team (2-2) split a doubleheader with the York College of Pennsylvania Spartans (4-3) on Thursday afternoon at Magis Field in Scranton.

Scranton captured a 2-0 victory in game one before dropping a 12-4 decision in five innings in game two.

Scranton 2, York (Pa.) 0

Noble scattered just four hits to go along with two walks and four strikeouts over her seven shutout frames as the Royals notched a 2-0 win in game one.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when an error, a walk and a fielder's choice loaded the bases for the Royals. Freshman Celia Totaro (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) stepped into the batter's box with two away and delivered an RBI single down the left field line to break the scoreless tie and an error charged to York (Pa.) LF Olivia Turchi allowed a second run to scamper home on the play.

York (Pa.) was able to put two runners on with two away in the seventh, but Noble induced a tapper back to the mound to secure the victory.

Natalie Rietema was dealt the loss for the Spartans as she allowed two unearned runs on two hits while walking five and fanning seven in 6.0 IP.

York (Pa.) 12, Scranton 4 (F/5)

The Spartans scored multiple runs in four of the five innings as the Royals dropped a 12-4 decision in the nightcap.

York (Pa.) struck for four in the first including a two-run homer by Emma Wade, but Scranton quickly answered with a pair in the home half as senior Sarah Stepnowski (Monroe Twp., N.J./Monroe) knocked in a run with an RBI triple and freshman Alexa Bruno (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) delivered an RBI single to cut the lead to 4-2.

Following two more Spartan runs in the top of the second, the Royals once again fought back as Totaro plated a run with an RBI groundout and junior Hannah Keane (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) delivered an RBI single that brought the hosts within 6-4 after three innings.

Freshman Carly Heyward (Wall, N.J./Wall) was charged with the loss for the Royals as she gave up five runs on three hits to go along with four walks and two strikeouts over 1 1/3 IP.

Kyrsten Coppage recorded the win for York (Pa.) after allowing four runs on seven hits to go along with a walk and two strikeouts in five innings.

The fourth and fifth innings proved to be the difference in the game as York (Pa.) plated four in the fourth and two more in the fifth to build the 12-4 advantage.

Totaro (2-3, RBI, R) tallied a multi-hit game for the Royals.

Scranton begins the program's annual Spring Break trip on Monday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. with contests against Stevenson (9 a.m.) and Keystone (1 p.m.).
