WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Scranton softball team (15-9, 2-6 Landmark) recorded a 3-0 shutout win in game two and salvaged a split of a doubleheader with the Catholic Cardinals (19-9, 5-3 Landmark) on Sunday at the Catholic Softball Field in Washington, D.C.
Catholic took game one by a score of 2-0 before the Royals bounced back with the 3-0 win in the nightcap.
Catholic 2, Scranton 0
The Cardinals scored both runs in the third and got a complete game shutout from Aubrynn Arcement to record the 2-0 win in game one.
An RBI groundout and a sac fly brought home the two runs in the third for the Cardinals.
Scranton had loaded the bases with one away in the top of the third, but were unable to push a run across as Arcement induced a 5-2-3 double play to end the inning.
Sophomore Carley Noble (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) was dealt the loss for the Royals as she allowed two runs on three hits in three innings of work.
Arcement scattered six hits while walking two and fanning four over her 7.0 IP.
Five different players tallied a hit for the Royals and freshman Juliana Janezic (Southington, Conn./Cheshire Academy) allowed four hits over three shutout innings of relief.
Scranton 3, Catholic 0
Junior Alyssa Mosconi (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) matched her career-high with three RBI and three different pitchers combined on the shutout to help Scranton earn the split of the doubleheader.
Sophomore Samantha Shaw (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) gave two hits to go along with a walk and a strikeout in three innings of work, senior Courtney Wellet (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) worked 1/3 of an inning and sophomore Soleil Dooner (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) allowed two hits over 3 2/3 shutout IP of relief for the Royals.
Dooner recorded the victory, which is her third of the season.
Mosconi gave the Royals the lead in the top of the first with an RBI single to score freshman Celia Totaro (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) who had led off the game with a walk.
Justina Benevenuto took the loss for Catholic as she allowed a run on two hits while walking two and fanning one in 4 1/3 IP.
The Royals added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on the strength of Mosconi's two-run double.
Mosconi (2-4, 2B, 3 RBI) led the way offensively and senior Jessica Stadler (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) tallied her 100th career hit in the victory.
Scranton will return home to host Misericordia in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon with first pitch of game one set for 4 p.m.
