SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton softball team (18-16) dropped a pair of contests to the Lebanon Valley College Dutchmen (28-6) in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Magis Field in Scranton.
The Royals dropped game one by a score of 7-5 and then fell 7-2 in the nightcap.
LVC 7, Scranton 5
LVC scored in each of the final two innings and was able to hold on for the 7-5 victory in game one.
A pair of RBI doubles in the top of the sixth gave the Dutchmen the lead and then added an insurance run with a solo shot in the seventh that made it 7-5.
Freshman Juliana Janezic (Southington, Conn./Cheshire Academy) was dealt the loss for the Royals as she allowed seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits to go along with three walks and three strikeouts over 7.0 IP.
Jordan Walter walked one and struck out two over 2 1/3 IP of scoreless relief to record the win for the Dutchmen.
LVC grabbed an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the third, but Scranton quickly responded with two in the home half including an RBI single from sophomore Emmie Feltenberger (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts).
After the visitors regained the lead with a two-run fourth and a solo run in the fifth that made it a 4-2 game, the Royals answered with three in the home half of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead for the time being.
In the three-run fifth, senior Sarah Stepnowski (Monroe Twp., N.J./Monroe) knocked in a run with an RBI double and scored to tie the game on classmate Jessica Stadler's (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) RBI double. Stadler then scampered home on a sac fly from junior Alyssa Mosconi (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills).
Erin Sinatra got the start for LVC and gave up five runs (four earned) on four hits while walking five and fanning six over 4 2/3 IP in a no-decision.
LVC 7, Scranton 2
The Dutchmen were able to break open the game with a four-run sixth inning as part of the 7-2 victory.
LVC immediately got on the board with two in the first, but the Royals got one back in each of the next two innings to tie the game at two apiece. Freshman Celia Totaro (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) scampered home from third on a pickoff attempt to first base in the first inning and sophomore Julia Vesey (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) plated a run via an RBI groundout in the second.
An unearned run in the top of the third allowed the Dutchmen to regain the lead and then the afore-mentioned four-run sixth which included a two-run double from Danni Holmes extended the lead to 7-2.
Sophomore Soleil Dooner (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits to go along with two strikeouts in 3.0 IP and was dealt the loss for Scranton.
Walter gave up two runs on seven hits with one strikeout in a complete game effort to record the win for the Dutchmen.
Feltenberger and junior Kylie Rochford (Tinton Falls, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) tallied two hits apiece for the Royals, while sophomore Carley Noble (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) retired all four batters she faced in relief.
The Royals hit the road to battle Moravian on Saturday afternoon with first pitch of game one slated for 1 p.m.
