SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton softball team (13-5, 0-2 Landmark) dropped a pair of close games to the Lycoming Warriors (11-6, 4-2 Landmark) as the Royals opened conference play on Sunday afternoon at Magis Field in Scranton.
The Royals dropped a 1-0 decision in nine innings in game one before falling by a 4-2 score in the nightcap.
Lycoming 1, Scranton 0 (F/9)
Lycoming's Mallory Rodarmel delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth and the Royals dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker.
Kylie Segraves drew a leadoff walk for the Warriors in the ninth, took second on a sac bunt and later scored on Rodarmel's two-out single.
Freshman Juliana Janezic (Southington, Conn./Cheshire Academy) was dealt the tough-luck loss for the Royals as she gave up one run on four hits while walking two and fanning six in a complete game effort.
Avery Eiswerth recorded the win for Lycoming as she allowed one hit to go along with a walk and 10 strikeouts in 9.0 IP.
Sophomore Emmie Feltenberger (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) doubled in the contest for Scranton.
Lycoming 4, Scranton 2
Lycoming took the lead for good with a three-run third inning and was able to hold on as the Royals dropped a 4-2 decision in the nightcap.
The Royals grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the second with consecutive RBI singles from sophomore Julia Vesey (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) and junior Kylie Rochford (Tinton Falls, N.J./Red Bank Catholic).
However, the Warriors quickly answered with the three-run third as Eiswerth tied the game with an RBI triple and later scored the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice.
Scranton put two runners on in both the fourth and sixth innings including two on with nobody out in the sixth, but Lycoming's Kylie Russell was able to escape the jam.
Sophomore Carley Noble (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) was dealt the loss for the Royals after being charged with three runs on four hits to go along with two strikeouts in 2 1/3 IP. Classmate Soleil Dooner (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) came on in relief and gave up just one run while fanning five over 4 2/3 IP.
Russell got the win for Lycoming as she allowed two runs on eight hits and walked five and struck out two in 7.0 IP.
Rochford (2-2, RBI, SB) and freshman Celia Totaro (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) who registered three hits both had multi-hit games for Scranton.
The Royals will host Drew in a Landmark Conference doubleheader on Tuesday at Magis Field with first pitch of game one set for 4 p.m.
