Redding's Hattrick Leads Field Hockey to Landmark Win Over Elizabethtown, 6-3

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA – Graduate Student Katie Redding's hat trick led The University of Scranton field hockey team to a win over Elizabethtown College by a final score of 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at Wolf Field.

The Basics

  • Final Score: Scranton 6, ETown 3 
  • Records: Scranton (9-1, 2-0 Landmark); ETown (4-5, 1-1)
  • This is the eighth straight win for Scranton.

How it Happened

  • After the Royals had three failed penalty corner attempts in the first seven minutes, they finally broke through on their fourth try, as Redding took a pass from senior Lauren Franco, and she buried the shot to put the Royals ahead 1-0.
  • Under two minutes later, freshman Shana Goldsmith found the back of the cage to extend the Royals' lead to 2-0.
  • The Blue Jays got on the board with 3:37 to go in the second quarter, lifting the ball over the head of senior goalie Gianna Travia on a penalty corner.
  • ETown opened the third quarter with two penalty corners in the first five minutes and found the equalizer on the second attempt on a shot from Hannah Long to make it a 2-2 game.
  • Scranton responded under three minutes later, going back in front by a score of 3-2 on a goal from sophomore Ava De Natale.
  • With five minutes to play in the third quarter, senior Reagan Dolan converted on the Royals' first penalty stroke of the season, giving them a two-goal advantage. 
  • That two-goal edge did not last long, however, as the Blue Jays scored 29 seconds later to bring the Royals lead to 4-3.
  • The Royals pulled away in the fourth quarter, with Redding scoring two goals in the last five minutes to give the Royals the 6-3 lead that ended up being the final score.

Top Performers

  • Redding recorded a hat trick, the eighth of her career.
  • Dolan posted one goal and one assist.
  • Goldsmith and De Natale each scored one goal. 

Inside the Box Score

  • Scranton held a convincing 22-6 advantage in shots and an 18-3 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Royals held a 9-8 edge in corner attempts.
