Men's Hoops Drops Road Contest at Moravian, 71-56

BETHLEHEM, PA -- The University of Scranton men's basketball team was defeated 71-56 at Moravian University in Landmark Conference action on Wednesday evening.

The Basics
  • Final Score: Moravian 71, Scranton 56
  • Records: Moravian (10-4, 5-2 LC), Scranton (7-7, 2-5 LC)
How it Happened
  • After falling down in the opening minutes of the game, Scranton fought back to within one at the 13:18 mark as threes from freshman Will Marion and senior Will McLoughlin followed by a layup from freshman Sammy Tornabene cut Moravian's lead to 9-8. 
  • Junior Jon Spatola converted an and-one at the 7:41 mark to tie the game up for the first time of the contest, 15-15. Spatola then drilled a three to give Scranton its first lead of the game with just over five minutes remaining in the opening half, 18-17. 
  • The Royals closed out the first half on an 8-4 run to take a five point lead into the break, 26-21. 
  • Spatola scored the first points of the second half to grow Scranton's lead to seven, but the Greyhounds responded with a three to cut the lead to four. 
  • The Royals used a balanced scoring attack to hold the lead throughout the early stages of the second half, but Moravian took back the lead at the 9:04 mark. 
  • Scranton held close until the final seven minutes when the Greyhounds went on a 20-9 run to close out the game and win by a final score of 71-56. 
Top Performers
  • Spatola led the way offensively with a team-high 16 points.
  • McLoughlin posted his fifth double-double of the year with 14 points and 13 boards. 
  • Tornabene contributed 10 points off the bench. 
Inside the Box Score
  • The Royals out rebounded the Greyhounds, 34-30.
  • Scranton scored 28 points in the paint compared to 20 for Moravian. 
  • Turnovers proved costly for the Royals as they allowed 20 points off of 24 turnovers.
