Shaw's Hat Trick Leads Scranton Field Hockey Past Moravian, 5-0

Box Score SCRANTON, PA -- The University of Scranton field hockey team won its fifth straight Landmark Conference game with a dominating 5-0 victory over Moravian University on Wednesday evening at Weiss Field.

The Basics

  • Final Score: Scranton 5, Moravian 0
  • Records: Scranton (11-3, 5-0 Landmark), Moravian (5-9, 1-4 Landmark)

How it Happened

  • Scranton scored 48 seconds into the game on its first penalty corner attempt of the night. The insertion went to junior Maggie Keys, who fired a shot toward the cage that was deflected perfectly by sophomore Olivia Dougherty directly to senior Annie Shaw who redirected the ball into the cage to give Scranton a 1-0 lead.
  • The Royals scored their second goal just 41 seconds into the second quarter, again on a penalty corner. This time, after her initial shot was saved, Keys grabbed a rebound and ripped a shot that was tipped into the cage by Dougherty to make it a 2-0 Royals' lead.
  • Just 3:50 later, Scranton converted on yet another corner to take a 3-0 advantage. Senior Emily Gallagher sent a ball past the Greyhounds' defense that Shaw was in perfect position to tip into the cage for her second goal of the night.
  • Scranton began the third period just like they started the first two - scoring in the initial minute of the quarter. Sophomore Shana Goldsmith stole the ball away from a defender and took a shot that was saved by the keeper, however, Shaw quickly gathered the rebound and scored to complete the first hat trick of her career.
  • With 4:39 left to go in the game, Keys sent a crosser in front of the goal that freshman Olivia Burdo deflected into the cage for Scranton's fifth goal of the night.
