Softball Drops Pair of Close Contests to John Jay College

SCRANTON, PA -- The University of Scranton softball team was defeated in both games of a home doubleheader against John Jay College on Thursday at Magis Field.

The Basics
  • Records: Scranton (4-2), John Jay (3-1)
Game 1: John Jay - 7, Scranton - 4

How it Happened
  • John Jay took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a 2 RBI single. 
  • Scranton recorded its first run in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore Alexa Bruno scored on a wild pitch.
  • Later in the fifth, senior Alyssa Mosconi hit a two-run homer over the left field wall to put the Royals ahead 3-2.
  • John Jay scored five runs on six hits in the top of the seventh to take a 7-3 lead.
  • Mosconi doubled to left field to score fellow senior Kylie Rochford in the bottom of the seventh but that was the only offense the Royals could generate in the final inning as John Jay went on to win, 7-4.
Top Performers
  • Mosconi went 3-4 with 3 RBI and hit her second home run of the year. 
  • Freshman pitcher Emma Douglas tossed four innings with three strikeouts and no earned runs. 

Game 2: John Jay - 5, Scranton - 2

How it Happened
  • John Jay capitalized on a pair of Scranton mistakes in the top of the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead.
  • In the top of the fifth, John Jay scored its third run of the game on a throwing error by the Royals.
  • Sophomore Celia Totaro hit a ball down the left field line past John Jay's left fielder and used her elite speed to record a two-run inside the park home run in the bottom of the fifth. 
  • John Jay scored the final two runs of the game in the top of the seventh on a two RBI double down the left field line. 
Top Performers
  • Totaro went 2-4 with 2 RBI and the first home run of her career. 
  • Rochford and Mosconi each went 2-4 at the plate.

Up Next
  • The softball team will head to Florida for spring break with the first game taking place on Sunday, March 16 at 11:30 a.m. against SUNY Cortland.
