Big Second Half Proves Costly as Women's Lacrosse Falls to No. 13 TCNJ, 15-10

EWING, N.J. - The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team battled for all 60 minutes but ultimately fell 15-10 on the road to No. 13 TCNJ on Wednesday afternoon.

The Basics

  • Final Score: TCNJ – 15, Scranton – 10
  • Records: TCNJ (2-0), Scranton (0-4)

How it Happened

  • TCNJ opened the scoring in the fifth minute of the first quarter and then scored goals on back-to-back free position shots just 30 seconds apart from each other to extend the lead to 3-0. The Lions added another goal one minute later to push the lead to four goals.
  • Scranton sophomore Eileen Hewitt got Scranton on the board at the 7:01 mark, driving in from the 12-meter fan and flipping a shot underneath the Lions' goalie Julia Charest's stick to cut the lead down to 4-1.
  • Just 1:05 later, sophomore Jillian Lopez scored her first goal of the game on a free position shot to cut the Lions' lead down to two goals.
  • The Royals scored again 37 seconds later, reducing the deficit to 4-3. After senior Grace Lane's free position shot was blocked Charest and deflected in the air, Lane redirected it toward Lopez who tapped it into the back of the net to pull Scranton within one goal.
  • TCNJ extended its lead with back to two goals when Marissa Lucca scored a player-up goal with 1:53 left in the first. The Lions took that 5-3 lead into the second quarter.
  • Scranton continued to battle as graduate student Erin Reich connected with Lopez over the middle of the field and the sophomore was able to score her third goal of the game to bring the Royals back within one.
  • Just 1:06 seconds later, however, the Lions scored their sixth goal of the contest in a player-down scenario to extend the lead to 6-4.
  • Once again, the Royals responded. This time, Reich made a nice move to get past a defender and ripped a shot by Charest for her first goal of the afternoon, cutting TCNJ's lead back down to one goal at 6-5.
  • Reich got the Royals even after taking it all the way to net for the goal, tying the score at six apiece with two minutes left in the half.
  • TCNJ went on a three-goal run to open the third quarter as Veronica Campell scored for the third time and Marissa Lucca scored her second and third goals of the game to push the Lions' lead to 9-6.
  • Lopez responded for the Royals, going through four Lions defenders and scoring her fourth goal of the contest, although TCNJ answered 1:16 seconds later to stay ahead by three.
  • The Royals scored a player-up goal at the 3:20 mark as Hewitt found Reich who scored her third of the game, but TCNJ responded with just over a minute to play in the third quarter as the Lions took an 11-8 lead into the fourth.
  • After TCNJ scored their 12th goal of the contest, Hewitt converted on a free position shot for her second score of the game, bringing the Royals back within three as TCNJ held a 12-9 advantage with 12:43 to go in the game.
  • The Lions responded 1:07 after the Hewitt goal and then scored two more times after that before Lopez scored her fifth of the game on a free position shot with just over a minute left to play.
