Women’s Volleyball Blanks Moravian, Falls to Rowan

The University of Scranton women's volleyball team split its Saturday series at the John Long Center. The Royals defeated Moravian 3-0, but later fell to Rowan by the same score. 

Game 1 vs. Moravian
The Basics
  • Set Series: Scranton 3, Moravian 0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-19)
  • Records: Scranton (10-5, 2-0), Moravian (10-8, 1-1)
How It Happened
First Set
  • The freshmen duo of Angela Bush and Andie Fortmeyer opened the first set with kills to help the Royals take a 3-0 lead. 
  • Moravian tied the game at 4-4, but back-to-back service aces from senior Gabby Konrad ignited a 4-0 run to give Scranton the lead back. 
  • The Greyhounds pushed back, tying the set at 15-15.
  • The teams traded points for the rest of the set until the Royals took the advantage at 24-23, and junior Danielle Kramer delivered the set winning kill.
 
Second Set
 
  • Both teams struggled at the service line early in the second, as the Greyhounds took a 7-3 lead.
  • The Royals stormed back with a 5-0 run, as Bush scored three kills and Kramer added two of her own to give Scranton an 8-7 lead.
  • Points were traded for the remainder of the set, but the Royals held on to win 25-22, taking a 2-0 advantage.
 
Third Set
 
  • Junior Ava Seidenstein opened scoring in the first set, but the Greyhounds fought back to take a 4-2 lead.
  • Down by one at 9-8, Scranton scored seven straight points, four of which were service aces from Konrad. 
  • The Royals extended the lead to 19-10, but the Greyhounds came out of a timeout to post a six-point swing, putting themselves in striking range at 19-16.
  • The Royals survived the surge, as a kill and ace from Fortmeyer and a Kramer kill finished out the set and game, 25-19.

  • Scranton served 10 aces and accounted for 8 total blocks
Game 2 vs. Rowan
The Basics
  • Set Series: Scranton 0, Rowan 3 (25-21, 25-15, 25-22)
  • Records: Scranton (9-5, 1-0), Rowan (10-6, 0-1)
How It Happened
First Set
  • Seidenstein struck first for the Scranton, as the Royals and Profs traded points early in the set.
  • The Profs went on a 7-1 run to take a 16-13 lead, but kills from Vargas, Fortmeyer, Bush, and Quirk tied the game at 18 a piece. 
  • The Royals were unable to capitalize on their surge, dropping the set 25-21.
 
Second Set
 
  • The Profs carried their momentum into the second set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead.
  • The Royals pulled within two down 9-11, but Rowan answered to take a commanding 17-10 lead.
  • Two kills from Quirk ignited a Royal run that brought Scranton within five, down 18-23.
  • At set point, the Royals put up a strong fight, scoring five straight to cut the Profs' lead to one.
  • However, the Profs held on to take the set 25-23.
 
Third Set
 
  • The third set was another point-for-point battle, with Fortmeyer scoring three kills and Bush adding two to tie the game at 10-10.
  • Rowan capitalized on Royal errors to take a four-point lead, 17-13.
  • Scranton battled back, with Vargas scoring four kills and Freshman Audrey Hibbard recording an ace to bring the Royals within one, down 18-19.
  • The Profs took control from there, finishing the set and match with a score of 25-20.

  • The Royals struggled at the service line, committing 9 errors
