Scranton Wrestling Competes at NCAA Region 3 National Qualifier

EWING, N.J. — The University of Scranton wrestling team competed on Friday at the NCAA Division III Region III Qualifier, hosted by The College of New Jersey.

The Royals were represented across all 10 weight classes, highlighted by a pair of wrestlers who advanced to the quarterfinal round in their respective brackets.

  • At 125 pounds, Luke Griffin (10-13) scored 4.0 team points. After receiving a first-round bye, Griffin earned a win by forfeit over Ethan Liptzin of Delaware Valley in the second round. He was pinned by Christian Horvath of Muhlenberg in the quarterfinals and later fell to Isaiah Brewster of McDaniel by major decision in the consolation bracket.
  • At 133 pounds, Mark Ortiz (6-16) went 0-2 on the day. He dropped his opening match by injury default to Garrett Totten of TCNJ before falling by pin to Maximus Conley of Albright in the consolation round.
  • Christopher Cordero (6-9) competed at 141 pounds and finished 0-2. He was defeated by technical fall in his opening bout against Temuujin Erdenetuya of Marymount and later fell by technical fall to Jacob Grzybek of York (Pa.).
  • At 149 pounds, Shkeb Nadir (12-14) went 0-2. He was defeated by technical fall by Chance Babb of Alvernia in the championship bracket and later fell by pin to Aidan Krass of Merchant Marine in consolation action.
  • Logan Donato (8-13) represented Scranton at 157 pounds. After a first-round bye, Donato was pinned by Trent Mahoney of Albright in the second round and later dropped a technical fall decision to Ian Vitalo of Alvernia in the consolation bracket.
  • At 165 pounds, Donell Young (23-5) scored 3.0 team points with a pair of victories. Young opened with a major decision over Tyson Derenberger of Muhlenberg and followed with a 12-10 decision against Nicholas DeLorenzo of Eastern to advance to the quarterfinals. He was edged by Beknazar Baiyshbekov of Albright, 5-4, and later fell to Derek Giordano of Ursinus in the consolation bracket.
  • Charles Kitching (11-12) competed at 174 pounds and went 0-2. Following a first-round bye, he was pinned by Davis Keppley of Albright and later dropped a 7-3 decision to Alex Taylor of McDaniel in consolation action.
  • At 184 pounds, Quinton Laughlin (11-17) went 0-2. He fell by technical fall to Abdoul Akala of Albright before being pinned by Ben Sanders of Ursinus in the consolation round.
  • Joseph Epright (3-21) represented the Royals at 197 pounds and finished 0-2, dropping technical fall decisions to Tucker Seidel of Messiah and Tristan Cuellar of Misericordia.
  • At heavyweight (285 pounds), Max Shnipes (20-8) went 0-2. He was pinned by Matthew Coon of TCNJ in the opening round and later fell by pin to David Pierson of York (Pa.) in the consolation bracket.

Scranton concluded competition with 7.0 total team points at the NCAA Division III Region III Qualifier. The Royals finished the 2025-26 season with an 11-7 record in dual matches.
