Scranton Baseball Begins Spring Break Trip With Sweep of Farmingdale State

DAVENPORT, Fl. -- The University of Scranton baseball team opened its Spring Break trip with a double header sweep against the Farmingdale Rams, improving to 7-3 on the season. 

The Basics 

  • Game 1 Final Score: Scranton – 6, Farmingdale State – 5 
  • Game 2 Final Score: Scranton – 13, Farmingdale State – 3 
  • Records: Scranton (7-3), Farmingdale State (1-4) 

Game One - W: Vince Cannizzaro (1-0); L: Matt Faraone (0-1); S: Ryan Boyd (1) 

How it Happened 

  • Farmingdale State scored three runs in the first inning on three hits to take an early 3-0 lead. 
  • The Royals answered in the bottom of the first with three runs of their own to tie the game. Jared Casella scored on a passed ball, Joey Granko singled home Conor Campbell, and Matthew Gannon crossed the plate on an error to make it 3-3. 
  • The Rams regained the lead in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs with two outs on an RBI single and an RBI double to go ahead 5-3. 
  • Scranton pulled one back in the bottom half of the inning, as Aidan Casey brought home Hunter Petrich on a sacrifice fly. 
  • The Royals took the lead in the fifth inning. Singles by Campbell and Heitzman opened the frame, and a walk to Matthew Gannon loaded the bases. Granko then singled up the middle to score two runs and give the Royals a 6-5 advantage. 
  • Ryan Boyd sealed the victory for Scranton with a six-out save, striking out two and allowing just one hit.
Top Performers 
  • Joey Granko led the Royals at the plate, going 2-3 with 3 RBI. 
  • Conor Campbell went 2-3 with a double and two runs scored. 
  • Ryan Boyd worked to innings of one hit ball with two strikeouts to earn the save. 


Game Two (F/7) - W: Matt Holgado (1-0); L: Derek Torres (0-1) 

How it Happened 

  • The Royals erupted for nine runs on six hits in the second inning against Rams starter Derek Torres, setting the tone as they pursued the doubleheader sweep. 
  • After an RBI groundout by Roman Valvano brought home the first run, Jack Portman, who had doubled earlier, scored on a wild pitch for the second. Three batters later, Brayden Keller singled home James Nitti to make it 3-0. One batter later, John Heitzman lined a two-run double to extend the lead to 5-0. The Royals capped the inning with a three-run home run by Portman. 
  • Scranton added four more runs in the top of the fourth. A throwing error allowed two runs to score, and productive outs from Nitti and Thomas Lacoe drove in two more to push the lead to 13-0. 
  • The Rams broke through in the bottom of the fourth with two runs to trim the deficit to 13-2. 
  • Farmingdale State added one more run in the bottom of the sixth, but Scranton closed out a 13-3 victory in seven innings. 
Top Performers 
  • Jack Portman led the way on offense, going 3-4 with a HR, 3 RBI and 3 runs scored. 
  • John Heitzman went 2-1 with 2 RBI and one run scored. 
  • Roman Valvano drove in two and scored once. 
  • Matt Holgado tossed four innings and allowed one earned run with four strikeouts.
