MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The University of Scranton softball team used a dominant performance in the circle and a late offensive surge to defeat FDU-Florham, 5-1, in eight innings on Wednesday afternoon. The Royals went 6-1 during their spring break trip and improved to 8-3 on the season.
The Basics
- Final Score (8 inn.): Scranton 5, FDU-Florham 1
- Records: Scranton (8-3), FDU-Florham (8-1)
How It Happened
- In what was a tightly contested game early on, both teams were held scoreless through the first four innings as pitching and defense controlled the pace.
- Scranton broke through in the top of the fifth inning. After reaching base, Gianna Muliero came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Quin Doherty, giving the Royals a 1-0 lead.
- FDU-Florham answered in the sixth inning, tying the game at 1-1 on an RBI single from Giulia Olear.
- The game remained deadlocked until the eighth inning when Scranton erupted offensively. With the international tiebreaker rule in effect, the Royals capitalized:
- Gabriella Gorzkowski delivered the biggest hit of the day with a two-RBI single to give Scranton a 3-1 lead
- Doherty followed with an RBI groundout to extend the advantage
- Ellyn Cervona added an RBI single to cap a four-run inning
- In the circle, Emma Douglas was outstanding, tossing a complete-game eight-inning effort. She allowed just one run on eight hits while striking out four and not issuing a walk.
- Douglas shut the door in the bottom of the eighth, aided by a key defensive play that ended the game with a double play.
