Scranton Baseball Splits Saturday Double-Header with Juniata

The University of Scranton baseball teams split a double header against Juniata College, falling in game one 7-6 before bouncing back with a 7-4 win in game two Saturday afternoon in Huntingdon, Pa. 

The Basics 

  • Game 1 Final Score: Juniata – 7, Scranton – 6 
  • Game 2 Final Score: Scranton – 7, Juniata – 4 
  • Records: Scranton (11-5), Juniata College (6-7) 

Game One - Win: Landen Eichhorn (1-1), LossNick Hernandez 

How it Happened 

  • John Heitzman got Scranton on the board in the first, crushing a solo home run to right center field to put the Royals ahead 1-0. 
  • Juniata scored a run in the bottom of the second on an RBI single to tie the game at one apiece. 
  • The Royals added two runs in the top of the third inning on a Joey Granko RBI single and a bases loaded walk from Vincent Napolitano, regaining the lead at 3-1. 
  • Juniata tied the game again in the third, scoring a pair of runs on a double play and a two-out, RBI single. 
  • Scranton responded fast in the top of the fourth, plating three runs. A Heitzman sacrifice-fly put Scranton ahead 4-3, and a Matthew Gannon single scored a pair of runs to extend the lead to 6-3. 
  • The Eagles big inning came in the bottom of the sixth. Juniata scored a run on an error and brought in another on a sacrifice fly to get within one run. Then, back-to-back two-out, RBI singles put them ahead 7-6. 
  • Scranton was unable to score again, as Juniata took game one of the double header, 7-6. 
Top Performers 
  • Conor Campbell went 3-3 at the plate and scored two runs. 
  • John Heitzman went 2-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. 
  • Matthew Gannon tallied two hits and two RBI. 
  • Ryan Boyd pitched 2.1 innings pitched scoreless innings, allowing just three hits with five strikeouts. 


Game Two - WinMatt Holgado (2-0), Loss: Thomas Hunter (0-1), Save: Logan Mason (3) 

How it Happened 

  • The Royals struck first in the second inning, scoring the game's first run on an RBI ground out by Aidan Casey
  • Hunter Petrich doubled in a pair of runs in the top of the third inning to push the lead to 3-0. 
  • An RBI single for the Eagles got them on the board in the bottom half of the third, but Conor Campbell responded in the top of the fourth as he ripped a two-run single to extend the lead to 5-1. Evan Laub scored on an error later that inning, pushing Scranton's lead to five runs. 
  • Juniata scored its second run in the bottom of the fourth as Ethan Pfeffer stole home on an error by the catcher, cutting the Royals' lead to four. 
  • Joey Granko drove in Logan Mason in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-3 Scranton. 
  • The Eagles plated a pair of runs on a fielder's choice and a sacrifice-fly in the eighth inning but were unable to complete another comeback. Logan Mason pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out the final batter of the game to earn the save as Scranton won the second game 7-4. 
Top Performers 
  • Conor Campbell tallied two hits, two RBI, and one run scored. 
  • Hunter Petrich drove in two runs and scored once.
  • Matt Holgado earned the win, pitching 4.2 innings and allowing just one earned run.

  • The Royals will finish the series against Juniata College tomorrow, with the third game of the series scheduled for tomorrow at Noon in Huntingdon, Pa.
