Scranton Softball Sweeps Union with Pair of Walk-Off Wins

SCRANTON, PA -- The University of Scranton softball team swept a doubleheader against Union (N.Y.) on Sunday afternoon at Magis Field, earning a pair of dramatic walk-off victories to improve to 2-2 on the season.

Game One

  • Scranton – 6; Union (N.Y.) – 5 (8 Inn.)
  • Win: Carley Noble (1-0); Loss: Coco Medeiros (0-1)

How it Happened

  • Union struck first in the top of the second inning, scoring an unearned run after reaching on an error to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Garnet Chargers added another unearned run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly to extend their lead to 2-0.
  • Union continued to build its advantage in the fourth inning with an RBI groundout to make it 3-0.
  • Scranton responded in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Gianna Muliero tripled to right center to score Emmie Feltenberger and put the Royals on the board. Daniela Brescia followed with a sacrifice fly that brought Muliero home to cut the deficit to 3-2.
  • Union pushed its lead to 5-2 in the fifth inning, scoring twice with one run coming on a sacrifice fly and another on an error.
  • The Royals answered in the sixth inning with a three-run rally to even the score. Brescia doubled to drive in Feltenberger before Gabriella Gorzkowski delivered a two-RBI double that scored Brescia and Muliero to tie the game at 5-5.
  • After both teams were held scoreless in the seventh inning, Scranton completed the comeback in the bottom of the eighth. Emily Riehl came around to score the game-winning run when Quin Doherty singled through the left side to give the Royals the 6-5 walk-off victory.

How it Happened

  • Union broke a scoreless game in the top of the fifth inning with three runs. Sophia Gomes singled to drive in the first run before Sam Rose delivered a two-RBI double to give the Garnet Chargers a 3-0 lead.
  • Scranton answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning with a six-run outburst. Emmie Feltenberger started the rally with a solo home run to left field. Daniela Brescia followed with an RBI triple to score Gianna Muliero, and Mollie Ferreira tied the game with an RBI single that plated Brescia.
  • Later in the inning, Quin Doherty launched a three-run home run to center field to score Gabriella Gorzkowski and Ferreira and give the Royals a 6-3 advantage.
  • Union chipped away in the sixth inning with an RBI single from Gomes to make it 6-4.
  • The Garnet Chargers completed the comeback in the seventh inning, scoring twice on an RBI single and a fielder's choice to even the score at 6-6.
  • Scranton answered in the bottom of the seventh to secure its second walk-off win of the day. After Alexa Bruno entered as a pinch runner for Brescia and moved into scoring position, Gorzkowski delivered a double to right center that brought her home with the game-winning run.
