Scranton Baseball Falls to Misericordia, 21-14

The University of Scranton baseball team fell to Misericordia University, 21-14, on Wednesday in Dallas, Pa.

The Basics

How it Happened
  • Scranton jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the opening inning. John Heitzman led off with a double to center and later came around to score on an error. Jared Cassella followed with a single and came home on a Vincent Napolitano RBI double and Brayden Keller capped off the inning with an RBI single to push the lead to 3-0.
  • Misericordia responded in the bottom of the frame, scoring two runs on a pair of RBI singles to cut the lead to 3-2.
  • The Cougars tallied six more runs in the second inning on six hits to stretch the lead to 8-3.
  • The Royals answered in the top of the third, plating five runs to tie the game 8-8. With the bases loaded, James Nitti drove in a run with an infield single, Jack Portman drew a walk to force in a run, and TJ DiMattia singled to left center to drive in two more runs to cut the deficit to 8-7. Jack Portman then came home to score on a wild pitch to tie the game at eight.
  • Misericordia plated seven runs on four hits in the bottom of the third to retake the lead, 15-8.
  • Scranton fought back, adding three runs in the fourth to get within four runs. Keller drove in a pair with a two-out, two-run double, and two batters later, Portman ripped an infield single to score Keller and cut the deficit to 15-11.
  • The Cougars added one run in fourth, two in the fifth, and three runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 21-11.
  • John Heitzman blasted a solo home run to right field in the top of the seventh to make the score 21-12.
  • The Royals plated two runs in the top of the ninth on RBI singles from Conor Campbell and Brandon Prince, but their comeback fell short as Scranton fell, 21-14.
