Scranton Men's Lacrosse Advances to NCAA Second Round with 15-14 Overtime Thriller over Maritime College

The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament with a thrilling 15-14 overtime victory over Maritime College on Wednesday afternoon at Weiss Field.

  • With the win, Scranton advances to the second round of the tournament and will travel to Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine for a second-round matchup on Saturday, May 9 at 12:00 p.m.

  • The victory marked Scranton's third straight NCAA First Round win at Weiss Field and the Royals' 13th consecutive victory. 

How It Happened

  • Scranton struck first as Brendan Donohue finished a feed from Cooper Roberts just over two minutes into the game, but Maritime answered with four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead after the first quarter.
  • Kyle Holmes opened the second-quarter scoring with an unassisted goal before Jason Kozak scored off a Donohue assist to cut the deficit to 4-3.
  • After Maritime extended the lead back to two, Chase Ritcey scored just 12 seconds later and added another goal off a Thomas Popolizio assist to tie the game at 5-5 with 3:35 remaining in the half.
  • The Privateers closed the opening half with two goals in the final seven seconds to take a 7-5 advantage into halftime.
  • Quinn Carson opened the second half with an unassisted tally before Maritime responded with consecutive goals to build a 9-6 lead.
  • The Royals answered with three straight goals as Kozak scored twice and then tied the game at 9-9 off an assist from Ritcey.
  • After Maritime regained the lead, Donohue and Holmes each scored in the final minutes of the third quarter to even the contest at 11-11 entering the fourth.
  • Ryan Hannaford gave Maritime the lead early in the fourth quarter before Cooper Roberts answered just 33 seconds later with an unassisted goal.
  • Thomas McCarvill and Donohue traded goals midway through the quarter before Nick Uzakewicz gave Maritime a 14-13 lead with 8:12 remaining.
  • With 1:32 left in regulation, Holmes scored off a Donohue assist to force overtime.
  • Scranton's defense came up with a key stop to open overtime, giving the Royals possession before Quinn Carson delivered the game-winning goal to send the Royals into the NCAA second round.
