Vargas powers Women’s Volleyball over Maine Maritime, 3-1

The University of Scranton women's volleyball team defeated Maine Maritime, 3-1, in game one of the MIT Invitational.  

The Basics
  • Set Series: Scranton 3, Maine Maritime 1 (21-25, 26-24, 25-19, 25-18)
  • Records: Scranton (3-2), Maine Maritime (1-2)
 
How It Happened
First Set
  • Scranton trailed 4-9 in the first set before Sophomore Adria Vargas delivered four of her seven first set kills to tie the game at 10-10.
  • The Royals and Mariners traded points for the rest of the set, resulting with a tie at 21 apiece.
  • Maine Maritime scored four straight points to hold on and win the set 25-21.
Second Set
  • In the second set, the Mariners jumped out to a 2-0 start, but the Royals stormed back with a 7-0 run. Sophomore Audrey Hibbard scored three straight service aces during the Royals run. 
  • The Royals were the first to 20 in the set, but the Mariners forced back-to-back errors to take a 22-20 lead. 
  • Down two at set point, Freshman Angela Bush added a kill, and Scranton defense forced three straight errors to take the set 26-24.  
Third Set
  • Royals' offense was on a roll in the third set, racing out to a 20-13 lead over the Mariners. 
  • Vargas contributed six kills, while Freshmen Natalie Kettler and Andie Fortmeyer added four each as Scranton took the third set, 25-19.
Fourth Set
  • Down 14-10 in the fourth, Vargas, Fortmeyer, and Senior Cammi Quirk recorded kills to tie the game at 14-14. 
  • With the score tied once again, the Royals scored six straight points fueled by Freshman Angela Bush, who contributed three of her own. 
  • Quirk delivered the final dagger with a service ace as the Royals won the fourth set 25-18.
