The University of Scranton field hockey team fell to Vassar College, 1-0, in a penalty shootout on Tuesday evening in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

How it Happened

• Vassar took the only two shots of the first period, with the first blocked and the second going wide as the game remained tied at 0-0 going into the second period.
• The Brewers put the pressure on Scranton's defense in the opening 10 minutes of the second quarter, but the Royals' defense stood tall. Kate McKillop tallied her third defensive save of the year, while sophomore goalie Ruby Sorber made three saves to keep Vassar off the board.
• Scranton returned the offensive pressure in the final five minutes of the period, recording two penalty corners and putting a pair of shots on goal, but Kendra Pitts made two saves to send the game into halftime tied, 0-0.
• It was more of the same in the third quarter, as Vassar opened the stanza with five shots in the first six minutes. The first was blocked, while the next four were saved by Sorber. Scranton again put two shots on net in the period, but both were denied.
• In the fourth quarter, Vassar filled the box score with four penalty corners and four shots but was unable to score, sending the game to overtime.
• Vassar had two corners and four shots in the first overtime period, but Sorber and the Royals' defense held strong. The Brewers added another corner and one shot on the cage in the second period of overtime that Sorber turned away for her 11th save of the game. Scranton was only able to muster one shot by Olivia Burdo over the 20 minutes of overtime, sending the game to a penalty shootout.
• After Sorber made a stop on Vassar's first shootout attempt and Burdo converted for Scranton, the Royals followed that up with three straight misses, while Vassar made three of its last four attempts to secure the victory.
