The University of Scranton women's volleyball team dropped a five-set match to John Hopkins, yet held on to win 3-1 against St. John Fisher on day one of the Hopkins Invitational in Baltimore, Maryland.
Game 1 vs. Johns Hopkins

First Set

- Senior Lexi Brown delivered a kill that gave the Royals their first lead of the game, 4-3.
- Freshman Angela Bush led Scranton in the first set with four kills, but the Royals were unable to overpower Hopkins, falling 25-17.
Second Set
- Early in the second set, Junior Ava Seidenstein scored a kill that gave the Royals a 5-4 lead they'd hold for the rest of the set.
- Hopkins' errors helped the Royals extend their lead, 22-16.
- Freshman Andie Fortmeyer delivered the set-winning kill as the Royals flipped the first set score, 25-17.
Third Set
- Hopkins had a 3-0 lead early in the third, before the Royals went on a 5-0 run to take a 7-4 lead.
- The Blue Jays tied the set at 18-18 and never looked back, taking the third set 25-21.
Fourth Set
- In the fourth set, the Royals and Blue Jays battled back and forth, but two consecutive kills gave Hopkins a 16-13 edge.
- Scranton battled back, tying the match at 24 apiece with a kill from Senior Cammi Quirk and forcing extra points.
- Bush and classmate Andie Fortmeyer scored kills that boosted the Royals over the Blue Jays, 27-25.
Fifth Set
- Hopkins jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in the decisive set.
- Sophomore Adria Vargas delivered a three-kill effort in the final points of the set, but the Blue Jays prevailed, winning the set and game, 15-9.

How It Happened
First Set
- The Cardinals opened the first set on a 5-0 run, but the Royals chipped away at the lead, thanks to four Vargas services aces, tying the game at 10-10.
- Both teams traded points for the majority of the set, but the Royals held on to win the first set, 25-23.
Second Set
- In the second set, St. John Fisher jumped out to an early lead of 8-4.
- Fortmeyer contributed two kills as the Royals got within three mid-set, then took the lead off a Cardinal error 23-22.
- A kill by Vargas and service error from the Cardinals gave the Royals the points to take the second, 25-23.
Third Set
- Scranton jumped out to a 3-2 lead, but the Cardinals went on a 7-0 run to regain the lead.
- Despite the efforts to battle back, the cardinals took the set 25-15.
Fourth Set
- In the fourth set, St. John Fisher took a 4-1 lead but kills from Quirk and Bush brought the Royals to a 6-6 tie.
- A 7-0 run sparked the Royals momentum, as Fortmeyer scored three kills and Brown added a service ace, bringing the Royals ahead 14-9.
- Scranton closed out the final set on a 4-1 run, winning the fourth and final set, 25-18.
