Scranton Field Hockey Edges Swarthmore in Penalty Shootout, 2-1

The University of Scranton field hockey team outlasted Swarthmore College, 2-1, earning a penalty shootout victory on Saturday afternoon at Clothier Field Stadium in Swarthmore, Pa.

The Basics

How it Happened

  • Both defenses stood strong in the opening half, keeping the game scoreless through 30 minutes. Sophomore goalkeeper Ruby Sorber made one save for the Royals, while Swarthmore goalkeeper Josie Sarno turned aside five shots, including three in the final five minutes of the first period.
  • Swarthmore broke the scoreless deadlock 6:30 into the third quarter, as Gabriella Vasquez tipped a shot into the back of the cage to give the Garnet a 1-0 lead.
  • Scranton pulled even late in the third quarter. On the Royals' fourth corner over a four-minute span, Kate McKillop sent a drive toward the back post, where Gracie Buchholz redirected it into the cage to make it a 1-1 game.
  • Both teams recorded two shots in the fourth quarter, but neither was able to find the back of the cage, sending the game to overtime tied at 1-1.
  • Each team had opportunities in the first overtime period, but neither could capitalize. The Royals recorded two shots, both of which were turned aside by Sarno. In the second overtime, each team managed one shot, but both went wide, sending the game to a penalty shootout.
  • Scranton took a 2-1 lead in the shootout after Sorber made two stops and Olivia Burdo converted her attempt. Sorber then denied two more Swarthmore attempts before Olivia Dougherty buried the decisive shot, securing the shootout victory for the Royals.

  • Kate McKillop made an impact on both ends of the field, recording one assist and a pair of defensive saves.
  • Gracie Buchholz scored the game-tying goal late in the third quarter, marking her first goal of the season.
  • Ruby Sorber made two saves in the contest and was perfect in the shootout, denying all of Swarthmore's attempts.
