TOWSON, Md.—The University of Scranton volleyball team got off to a rocky start in the first round of Landmark Conference round-robin competition this weekend at Goucher College.
The Royals suffered a 3-0 loss to Catholic University today, falling to 13-8 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Scranton battled the Cardinals evenly in the first set, losing 25-23, but the wheels came off in the second, hitting only .074 en route to dropping a 25-9 decision. The match was finally settled when Catholic held on for a 25-19 win in the third set.
Sophomore outside hitter Julia Crilly (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) led Scranton with 10 kills and 10 digs—her team-leading 12th ‘double-double” of the season—and senior outside hitter Jenell McFadden (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) finished with nine kills and six digs. Senior setters Juli Woods (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) and Emily Keim (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) combined for 23 of the Royals’ 24 assists.
The Royals will return to action tomorrow morning against Goucher at 10:00 a.m. before closing out the weekend with a 12:00 p.m. match against Susquehanna University.
