WILKES-BARRE, Pa.—Sophomore Lizzy Zimmermann (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) and senior Michaela McCrudden (Fort Washington, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) provided the spark The University of Scranton volleyball team so sorely needed Thursday evening against Wilkes University
Zimmermann finished with 10 kills and 12 digs—the first ‘double-double’ of her career—and McCrudden contributed seven kills and 15 digs as the Royals downed the Lady Colonels, 3-0, without two-time all-conference performer Julia Crilly (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) in the lineup.
Crilly suffered an injury in Tuesday’s 3-1 loss to Penn St.-Berks, and Royal first-year head coach Jamie Spangler kept her out of the lineup tonight for precautionary measures. She is expected, however, to return Saturday against Cabrini College and Rutgers-Camden.
The Royals didn’t miss a beat, hitting .357 in the first set, .242 in the second, and .250 in the third. Overall, Scranton hit a respectable .281.
The Royals also received 12 digs from freshman libero Victoria Reilly (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore), five blocks from senior middle hitter Kelly Johnson (Pearl River, NY/Albertus Magnus), and 19 assists, three service aces, and three digs from freshman setter Bailey Woods (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven).
Senior Casey Bohan (Harding, Pa./Wyoming Area) led the Lady Colonels, now 16-10, with 10 kills and sophomore setter Megan Powers (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) had 25 assists and four digs.
Johnson’s five total blocks tonight moves her into 10th place on the Royals’ all-time list with 243.
